Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

just as the people of Ṣāliḥ’s she-camel used to drink its milk every other day. Then Allah commanded Jesus to restrict the Table to the poor and the needy, excluding the wealthy. This proved difficult for many, and the hypocrites among them complained; consequently the Table was taken away altogether, and those who spoke against it were turned into swine.

Both Ibn Abī Ḥātim and Ibn Jarīr relate:

“Al-Ḥasan ibn Qazaʿah al-Bāhilī told us; Sufyān ibn Ḥabīb told us; Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah told us, from Qatādah, from Khilās(1), from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:

‘The Table descended from heaven bearing bread and meat. They were instructed neither to act treacherously, nor to store anything away, nor to set anything aside for the next day. Yet they betrayed, stored, and set aside, so they were transformed into apes and swine.’(3)”

Ibn Jarīr also transmitted it from Bundār(4), from Ibn Abī ʿAdī, from Saʿīd, from Qatādah, from Khilās, from ʿAmmār as a report halted (mauqūf) at ʿAmmār, and this is the sounder version.(5) The same report comes through Sammāk, from a man of Banū ʿAjl, from ʿAmmār—also mauqūf.(6) This is the correct view, and Allah knows best.

The link of Khilās to ʿAmmār is broken(7). Had this ḥadīth been sound as a marfūʿ report, it would have settled the question, for the scholars have differed over the Table: did it descend or not? The majority say that it did, as these reports indicate and as the plain wording of the Qur’an suggests—especially His statement: “Indeed, I am sending it down to you.”(8) Allah knows best.

Ibn Jarīr also transmitted, with a sound chain, from Mujāhid and from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī that they said: the Table did not descend; the disciples refused once they heard the divine threat: “Whoever among you disbelieves thereafter, I will punish him with a torment such as I shall inflict on no one else in all the worlds.”

For this reason it is said that the Christians know nothing of the story of the Table—it is not mentioned in their scriptures—although such an event would normally be widely reported. And Allah knows best.

(1) In al-Tabari’s Tafsir the name appears as Jalās ibn Amr, spelled with a jīm—a copyist’s error. The correct reading is Khilas ibn Amr al-Hajri, who is deemed reliable in Tahdhīb. (2) This reading occurs in the Ṭ copy and in al-Tabari’s Tafsir and is the most plausible. In manuscript A it reads “an la yakhunu li-ghad wa-lā yudakhirū…” (“that they should neither betray for tomorrow nor hoard…”), in manuscript B “an la yakhinū wa-lā yudakhirū li-ghad fa khānū…” (“that they should neither betray nor hoard for tomorrow, so they betrayed…”), and in the Mukhtasar Tarikh Dimashq “an la yakhbū wa-lā yudakhirū wa-lā yarfaʿū li-ghad…” (“that they should neither conceal nor hoard nor raise [prices] for tomorrow…”). (3) Tafsir al-Tabari, 7:87; also cited from Ammar in Mukhtasar Tarikh Dimashq, 20:107. (4) Muhammad ibn Bashshar ibn Uthman al-Abdi al-Basri, considered reliable; died in 252 AH (Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb 2:147). (5) Tafsir al-Tabari, 7:87. (6) Ibid. (7) He so stated; and regarding his phrasing nazara, he reported hearing it from Ammar, the master craftsman. This reading is also found in Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari’s Tarikh al-Kabir (3: entry 764) and by Abu Zurah al-Razi (see al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 3: entry 1844), among others. Accordingly, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar notes in Taqrīb: “It is sound that he heard it from Ammar” (see the commentary on Tahdhīb al-Kamal 8:367). (8) Tafsir al-Tabari, 7:88. (9) Ibid.
