them was his foretelling that he would one day rule. This was reported by Quṭb al-Dīn al-Yūnīnī (1), who added that the reason for the shaykh’s abundant weeping was that he had once accompanied a man endowed with extraordinary states and miracles. The shaykh set out with him from Baghdad and, within a single hour, they reached a town that ordinarily lay a year’s journey from the city. That man then said to him, “I shall die at such-and-such a time; bear witness for me at that hour in such-and-such a town.”
Shaykh ʿAlī (2) related: “When the appointed hour came I was present with him while he was in the throes of death. He had turned to face the east, so I directed him toward the qiblah. He turned back to the east, so I redirected him once more; whereupon he opened his eyes and said, ‘Do not bother, for I will die only facing this direction.’ He then began to speak in the language of the monks until he died. We carried him to a nearby monastery, where we found the people in deep mourning. We asked, ‘What is the matter?’ They replied, ‘We had an aged shaykh, one hundred years old, and today he died upon Islam.’ We said to them, ‘Take this one in exchange and hand over (3) our companion to us.’ They agreed, so we assumed responsibility for him: we washed, shrouded, and prayed over him, and buried him (4) among the Muslims, while they took that man and buried him in the Christians’ cemetery. We ask Allah for a good end (5).”
Shaykh ʿAlī died in Rajab of this year.
[Then the year 671 AH began.]
On the fifth of Muḥarram al-Ẓāhir reached Damascus, returning from the coastal lands he had conquered and pacified (6). Toward the end of Muḥarram he set out for Cairo, where he remained a full year; he then returned and entered Damascus on the fourth of Ṣafar (7).
Also in Muḥarram the Nubians reached ʿAydhab (8), plundered its merchants (9), and killed many of its inhabitants, among them the governor and the judge. Amīr ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Aydghadī (10) al-Khizindār marched against them; he killed many of their people, pillaged, burned, demolished, and devastated their land, thereby exacting retribution—praise and thanks be to Allah.
