Also in that same year:
Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1) arrived in Baghdad on behalf of Hulagu (2). He examined the awqaf (pious endowments) and the general state of the city, seized many books (3) from the various madrasas and transferred them to the observatory (4) he had built at Maragha. He then proceeded downstream to Wasit and Basra.
[In this year occurred the death of] al-Malik al-Ashraf (5) Musa ibn al-Malik al-Mansur Ibrahim ibn al-Malik al-Mujahid Asad al-Din Shirkuh ibn Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn Asad al-Din Shirkuh the Elder. [They had been the hereditary rulers of Homs down to that time, and he himself was counted among the celebrated men of generosity] (6) and among the opulent grandees of Damascus. He was meticulous about food and drink (7), fine clothing and mounts, the gratification of desires and ambitions, and lavish enjoyment of music and companions. Then all of that vanished as though it had never been—like the shards of a dream or a passing shadow—while its liabilities, punishments, reckoning, and disgrace remained. When he died vast hoards of precious jewels and great sums of money were found in his treasuries, and his realm passed to the Zahirid dynasty, [and over his territories he appointed, from the Bahri mamluks,] Husam al-Din Lajin (9).
In this same year the amir Husam al-Din al-Jukandar, the deputy of Aleppo, also died.
Likewise in that year the Tatars were routed at Homs and their commander Baydara was killed, by the fair decree of Allah and His preordained will.
al-Rashid al-ʿAttar (10): during this year as well, the hadith scholar al-Rashid al-ʿAttar passed away in Egypt.
