He replaced him with someone else, and later dispatched him as viceroy over al-Shām (1), as will be mentioned below.
On Tuesday, the ninth of Rajab, Sultan al-Malik al-Ẓāhir appeared at the Dār al-ʿAdl to litigate a case concerning a well before the judge Taj al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb (2) Ibn Bint al-Aʿazz. The assembly rose in respect to him, all save the judge, for the Sultan had signalled to him not to stand. The two parties stated their claims (3); the right was with the Sultan, and he produced upright testimony. Consequently the well was taken from the adversary, who was one of the emirs.
In Shawwāl the Sultan appointed Emir ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Aydakin (4) al-Shihābī as his deputy in Aleppo. At that very time (5) the army of Sis (6) raided al-Fūʿah (7) in the Aleppo countryside, whereupon al-Shihābī rode out against them, routed them, captured a number of their men, and sent the prisoners to Egypt, where they were put to death (8).
That same year the Sultan installed Emir Jamāl al-Dīn Āqūsh al-Najībī as deputy over Damascus—he was among the foremost emirs—and removed ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Ṭaybars (9) al-Wazīrī from the post, conveying him to Cairo.
In Dhū al-Qaʿdah the Sultan al-Malik al-Ẓāhir issued a decree to Judge Taj al-Dīn Ibn Bint al-Aʿazz instructing him to appoint, from each of the other three legal schools, a deputy judge. Accordingly he selected, for the Ḥanafīs, Ṣadr al-Dīn Sulaymān (10) al-Ḥanafī; for the Ḥanbalīs, Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad (11) ibn al-Shaykh al-ʿImād; and for the Mālikīs, Sharaf al-Dīn ʿUmar al-Subkī (12) al-Mālikī.
In Dhū al-Ḥijjah many Tatar delegations came to al-Malik al-Ẓāhir seeking safe-conduct; he honoured them and treated them generously.
