Maʿmar narrated on the authority of al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father:
Jesus the son of Mary met Iblīs. Iblīs said to him, “Do you not know that nothing can befall you except what has already been written for you?” He then added, “Climb to the summit of this mountain and hurl yourself from it; then see whether you live or not.” (1)
Jesus replied, “Have you not heard that Allah has said: ‘My servant is not to test Me, for I do whatever I will’?” al-Zuhrī commented, “It is not the servant who tests his Lord; rather, Allah is the One who tests His servant.” (2)
Abu Dāwūd said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdah narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us; from ʿAmr; from Ṭāwūs, who said:
The Devil came to Jesus son of Mary and said, “Do you not claim that you are truthful? Then go to that abyss and cast yourself down.” Jesus answered, “Woe to you! Has not Allah said: ‘O son of Adam, do not ask Me for the destruction of your own self, for I do whatever I wish’?”
Abu Tūbah al-Rabīʿ ibn Nāfiʿ narrated to us; Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us; I heard Khālid ibn Yazīd say:
The Devil worshiped alongside Jesus for ten years—or perhaps two. One day he stood on the brink of a mountain and said, “Tell me, if I throw myself down, will anything befall me other than what has been decreed for me?” Jesus replied, “I am not one who puts my Lord to the test; rather, my Lord tests me whenever He wills.” When he realized it was the Devil, he left him. (3)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Shurayḥ ibn Yūnus narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Thābit narrated to us; from Khaṭṭāb ibn al-Qāsim (4); from Abū ʿUthmān, who said:
Jesus—peace be upon him—was praying on the peak of a mountain. Iblīs came to him and said, “Are you the one who claims that everything occurs by decree and predestination?” “Yes,” he replied. Iblīs said, “Then throw yourself from this mountain and say, ‘It was decreed for me.’” Jesus responded, “Accursed one! Allah is the One who tests His servants; the servants do not test Allah, Glorified is He.” (5)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā al-Baṣrī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Bishār narrated to us; I heard Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah say:
Jesus son of Mary met Iblīs. Iblīs said to him, “O Jesus son of Mary, your exaltation has reached the point that you spoke in the cradle as an infant—something no one before you ever did.” Jesus answered, “Lordship belongs to Allah, Who made me speak, then will cause me to die, and then bring me back to life.” Iblīs continued, “And your exaltation is such that you raise the dead!” He replied, “Lordship belongs to Allah, Who gives life and death; those whom I revive, He will later cause to die and then bring to life again.” Iblīs said, “By Allah, you are indeed a god in heaven and a god on earth.” Thereupon Gabriel struck him a blow with his wing (6) that did not stop him until he was near the very horns of the sun; then he struck him a second blow with his wing, and he still did not stop until he reached the scalding spring.
