Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

the inhabitants of Paradise; for no people’s tongues have ever humbled themselves with the words “There is no deity but Allah” as their tongues have, and no people’s necks have ever bowed in prostration as their necks have bowed. Reported by Ibn ʿAsākir (1).

Ibn ʿAsākir also transmitted (2) through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Badīl al-ʿUqaylī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwsajah, that Allah revealed to Jesus the son of Mary:

“Give Me within yourself the place of your deepest concern, and store Me as a treasure for the Day of Return. Draw near to Me through voluntary works and I shall love you; do not take anyone besides Me as your guardian, lest I forsake you. Be patient in affliction, content with the decree, and strive for My pleasure, for My pleasure lies in being obeyed, not disobeyed. Remain close to Me; keep My remembrance alive upon your tongue; let My love dwell in your breast. Wake up from hours of heedlessness, exercise keen discernment, and be toward Me both eager and apprehensive. Subdue your heart in awe of Me. Guard the night for the sake of My good pleasure, and make your day thirsty—through fasting—for the Day of Refreshment with Me.

Compete earnestly in good deeds; acknowledge goodness wherever you find it; stand among creation with My counsel; judge My servants with justice. I have sent down to you a remedy for the whisperings of the breasts born of forgetfulness, and a polish for the eyes against the dimness of fatigue. Do not be like a mere cushion (3)—motionless, as though already seized—while you still breathe.

O Jesus, son of Mary, no creature has ever believed in Me without becoming humble, and none has humbled himself before Me without hoping for My reward; therefore I testify to you that such a one is safe from My punishment so long as he does not alter or replace My Sunnah.

O Jesus, son of Mary, pure and virginal, weep for yourself during the days of life as one who bids his family farewell, abhors the world, leaves its pleasures to its people, and lifts his longing to what is with his Lord. Speak gently and spread peace. Stay alert when the eyes of the righteous sleep, in dread of what is coming—of the Resurrection and the convulsions of overwhelming terrors—before the time when neither family nor wealth will avail. Anoint your eyes with the kohl of sorrow (4) when the idlers laugh, and in this be patient and seek reward; glad tidings to you if you attain what I have promised the patient.

Turn away from the world for Allah’s sake (5), day by day. Taste its flavor: that which has fled from you—where is its taste? and that which has not yet reached you—how sweet can it be? Withdraw from the world with only what suffices you (6); let the coarse, rough portion (7) be enough for you, for you have seen what it comes to. Act with reckoning in mind, for you will be questioned; and if your eye could but see what I have prepared for My righteous friends, your heart would melt and your soul would depart.
