Nor did any misguiding innovation survive; he clothed the Muʿtazili in disgrace. (1)
So may Allah’s mercy rest upon him forever—so long as a star in the sky sinks below the horizon or rises anew.
When he was martyred, al-Muntaṣir (2) assumed command, and after him, as the records relate, came al-Mustaʿīn (3).
Upon his death al-Muʿtazz (4) took the throne, followed by al-Muhtadī (5), the devout, the most honored (6).
Next al-Muʿtamid (7) seized authority, and al-Muʿtaḍid (8) laid the foundations of dominion and governed it.
Al-Muktafī (9) was inscribed in the exalted annals (10); after him al-Muqtadir (11) directed the affairs.
The realm was firmly secured (12) by the might of al-Qāhir (13), and after him came al-Rāḍī (14), peer to every noble distinction.
(1) The version of the couplet in edition T: “There remains no misleading bid‘ah (innovation) within it … and the Mu‘tazilī was clothed in humiliation.”
(2) Muḥammad al-Muntaṣir bi-Allāh b. al-Mutawakkil assumed the caliphate for three days at the end of Shawwāl 247 AH, and his reign lasted six months. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/423) and Zambaur (3).
(3) Aḥmad al-Mustaʿīn bi-Allāh b. Muḥammad b. al-Muʿtaṣim held the caliphate for five days of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir 248 AH, and his reign lasted three years and eight months. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/433) and Zambaur (3).
(4) Muḥammad al-Muʿtazz bi-Allāh b. al-Mutawakkil—called al-Zubayr b. al-Mutawakkil in Muruǧ al-Dhahab—assumed the caliphate for the two remaining nights of Muḥarram 252 AH, and his reign lasted four years and six months. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/449) and Zambaur (3).
(5) Muḥammad al-Muhtadī bi-Allāh b. al-Wāthiq held the caliphate for the one remaining night of Rajab 255 AH, and his reign lasted eleven months. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/461) and Zambaur (3).
(6) Manuscript A reads al-Akram; B reads al-Mukarram. The first reading disrupts the metre.
(7) Aḥmad al-Muʿtamid ʿalā Allāh b. al-Mutawakkil assumed the caliphate for the fourteen remaining nights of Rajab 256 AH, and his reign lasted twenty-three years. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/473).
(8) In edition T the name appears as al-Muʿtaqid, which is a corruption. Aḥmad al-Muʿtadid bi-Allāh b. al-Muwaffaq b. al-Mutawakkil held the caliphate for the twelve remaining nights of Rajab 279 AH, and his reign lasted nine years, nine months, and two days. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/495) and Zambaur. This couplet was placed two lines earlier in edition T in error; the position adopted here is more plausible.
(9) ʿAlī al-Muktafī bi-Allāh b. al-Muʿtadid assumed the caliphate for the eight remaining days of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir 289 AH, and his reign lasted six years, seven months, and twenty-two days—though other durations are reported. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/527) and Zambaur (3).
(10) In edition T the phrase “fīṣuḥuf al-ʿulā asṭur” appears, but it does not fit the metre.
(11) Jaʿfar al-Muqtaḍir bi-Allāh b. al-Muʿtadid held the caliphate for the thirteen nights that had passed of Dhū al-Qaʿdah 295 AH, and his reign lasted twenty-four years, eleven months, and sixteen days. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/539) and Zambaur (3).
(12) Manuscripts A and B read wa-stawsaq.
(13) Muḥammad al-Qāhir bi-Allāh b. al-Muʿtadid assumed the caliphate for the two remaining nights of Shawwāl 320 AH, and his reign lasted one year, six months, and six days. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/553) and Zambaur (3).
(14) Aḥmad al-Rāḍī bi-Allāh b. al-Muqtaḍir held the caliphate for six days of Jumādā al-Ulā 322 AH, and his reign lasted six years, eleven months, and three days. Muruǧ al-Dhahab (2/561) and Zambaur (3).
