In this same year (1) the Egyptians fought against the lord of Karak, al-Malik al-Mughīth ʿUmar ibn al-ʿĀdil [ibn Abī Bakr al-ʿĀdil] the Elder (2). In his army (3) were a number of the Bahriyya amirs (4), among them Rukn al-Dīn Baybars al-Bunduqdārī. The Egyptians routed them, carried off their baggage and treasure, and captured (5) a group of the leading amirs [whom they then put to death in cold blood] (6). The survivors returned to Karak in the worst and most humiliating condition (7) and began to spread corruption in the land and ravage the countryside. So Allah sent (8) al-Nāṣir, the ruler of Damascus, who dispatched an army to curb them. The Bahriyya defeated that force and asked for reinforcements, whereupon al-Nāṣir himself rode out against them; yet they paid him no heed and—at the signal of the aforementioned Rukn al-Dīn Baybars—cut the guy-ropes of the tent in which he was sitting. Battles and grave events followed whose full account would be lengthy; Allah’s help is sought.
