the great fire(1): it is like mountains of crimson flames, and the great mother source(2) from which the fires poured forth is by Qurayzah. The blaze has continued to grow and people no longer know(3) what may happen next. May Allah make the outcome good, for I am truly unable to describe this fire.
Abū Shāmah(4) said: In another letter that appeared(5) on the first Friday of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in the year 654 AH(6) a tremendous fire arose to the east of Madinah(7), half a day’s journey from the city. It burst from the ground, and a river of fire flowed until it came level with Mount Uhud; then it halted and has remained so to this very hour. We do not know(8) what we should do. When it first appeared, the people of Madinah went to their Prophet—may Allah have mercy on them—seeking forgiveness and repenting to their Lord, Exalted is He. These are portents of the Resurrection.
He also wrote in another letter: On Monday, the first of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, 654 AH, a sound like distant thunder was heard in Madinah, coming and going; it persisted for two days. On the night of Wednesday, the third of that month(9), the sound we had been hearing was followed by earthquakes, which continued(10) in this manner(11) for three days, fourteen tremors occurring every twenty-four hours. Then, on Friday, the fifth of the same month(12), the ḥarra burst forth(13) with a mighty fire whose size was comparable to the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It was plainly visible from Madinah; we watched it hurling sparks like palaces(14), just as Allah Most High has said. Its location is a place called Uḥaylayn(15). From this fire there issued a valley about four farsakhs long, four miles wide, and a man-and-a-half deep, and it is flowing across the surface of the earth.
