then he failed to keep them; both territories slipped from his grasp. In the end al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl had him confined in Ḥiṣn ʿIzzatā, where he remained until his death in this very year. In Shawwāl his body was carried to the mausoleum of al-Muʿaẓẓam at the foot of ⦗1⦘ Mount Qāsiyūn. At that time Ibn Yaghmūr⦗2⦘ was also in his custody as a prisoner, but al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl transferred him to the Citadel of Damascus. When al-Ṣāliḥ Ayyūb later gained control of the city, he had Ibn Yaghmūr sent to Egypt and hanged him together with al-Amīn Ghazāl⦗3⦘, the vizier of al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl, on the Citadel of Cairo, as retribution for what the two had done to al-Ṣāliḥ Ayyūb—may Allah have mercy on him. As for Ibn Yaghmūr, he had intrigued until the rule of Damascus passed to al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl; and Amīn al-Dawlah had prevented al-Ṣāliḥ from surrendering his son ʿUmar to his father. Thus al-Ṣāliḥ Ayyūb took vengeance upon them, and in this he is excused.⦗4⦘
Masʿūd ibn Aḥmad ibn Masʿūd ibn Māzah al-Muḥāribī
One of the distinguished Ḥanafī jurists, well-versed in Qurʾānic exegesis and hadith, and possessed of abundant merit. He arrived in Baghdad in the company of the Mongol envoy on ḥajj, was imprisoned for several years, then released, performed the pilgrimage⦗5⦘, and returned. He died in Baghdad this year—may Allah Most High have mercy on him.
Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Yaḥyā⦗6⦘ ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Baṭrīq ibn Naṣr ibn Ḥamdūn ibn Thābit al-Asadī, originally from Ḥillah, then Wāsiṭ, and finally Baghdad—a Shiʿi scribe and poet.
A jurist of the Shiʿa, he resided for a time in Damascus and praised many amirs and kings, among them al-Kāmil, ruler of Egypt, and others. He then returned to Baghdad, where he occupied the Shiʿa with their doctrine. Gifted, intelligent, and skilled in both verse and prose, he was nonetheless misguided and veiled from the truth.
Ibn al-Sāʿī has quoted a fine selection of his poetry⦗7⦘ [which attests to the breadth of his learning and intelligence—may Allah pardon him].
