so that they numbered (1) five thousand fighting men, Ṣalība, fully supplied with every piece of equipment and mounted on magnificent horses. They met Jalāl al-Dīn in Azerbaijan while he had twenty thousand soldiers; he could not stand before them for even an hour, showed no patience, retreated (2) and fled, and they pursued him (3) step for step, chasing him all the way to the city of Khoy. Al-Ashraf then returned to Khilāṭ and found it a desolate ruin; he rebuilt and strengthened it, after which he and Jalāl al-Dīn made peace. He then went back to the seat of his rule in Damascus—may Allah protect it and him.
In this year: Al-Ashraf took possession of the citadel of Baalbek from King al-Amjad Bahrām Shāh after a lengthy siege. He appointed his brother al-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl as deputy over Damascus, and then marched eastward (4) because Jalāl al-Dīn the Khwarazmian had seized the lands of Khilāṭ, killed great numbers of its people, and plundered vast wealth. Al-Ashraf encountered him (5) and a tremendous battle was fought; Al-Ashraf inflicted a crushing defeat upon him, many of the Khwarazmians were slain, and proclamations of victory resounded throughout the provinces in joy at Al-Ashraf’s triumph over the Khwarazmians—for they never entered a town without slaughtering its inhabitants and looting their property (6). Thus Allah, exalted is He, broke them.
Al-Ashraf had seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream before the clash, and he said to him, “O Moses, you shall be victorious over them.” When he had finished (7) shattering them, he returned to the lands of Khilāṭ, repaired its devastation, and set right whatever had been ruined there (8).
No one from Syria performed the pilgrimage in this year, nor in the year before it, nor in the one preceding that; for three consecutive years not a single pilgrim had set out from Syria to the Ḥijāz (9).
Also in this year: the Franks captured the island of Mayurqa, killed many of its people, and took others captive. They brought the prisoners to the mainland coast, where Muslims met them and learned from them what the Franks had done.
[Among those who died this year] was Zayn al-Umanaʾ, the righteous shaykh (10) Abū al-Barakāt al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Hibat Allāh.
