Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

O mighty king, you have instituted a practice
that shall abide for endless ages;
After you the kings will tread the path you marked:
unrobing the judges and sending gifts to the ascetics.
[This, too, is among the ugliest of deeds.] (1)

Ibn al-Zaki had four deputies:

  1. Shams al-Din ibn al-Shirazi (2), imam of the Mashhad of ‘Ali. He issued judgments there from the lattice window (3) and would sometimes step out to the edge of the portico opposite the Black Flagstone.
  2. Shams al-Din ibn Sanni al-Dawla (4), who sat in the window at al-Kalasa opposite the mausoleum of Sultan Salah al-Din at al-Ghazaliyya.
  3. Jamal al-Din al-Misri (5), administrator of the treasury; he judged from the Kamali window at the Mashhad of ‘Uthman.
  4. Sharaf al-Din al-Mawsili (6), a Hanafi, who held court in the Ṭarkhaniyya Madrasa (7) at Jirun—and Allah Most High knows best.

Among the notable persons who died in that year (8) were:
– Sitt al-Sham (9), patroness of the two madrasas, the Barraniyya (10) and the Jawwaniyya;
– the illustrious, chaste lady Khātūn Sitt al-Sham (11) bint Ayyub ibn Shadhi, sister to the kings and aunt to their sons,
