the Baghdadi preacher. He received ḥadith from Abū al-Waqt (1) and others, and he trained under Ibn al-Jawzī (2) in the art of public exhortation (3). Later he imagined himself his equal, grew conceited (4), and a faction from the Bāb al-Baṣrah quarter (5) gathered around him. Toward the end of his life, when he was close to seventy, he married; one cold day he performed a full bath, his private member became inflamed, and he died in this same year.
The amir Zayn al-Dīn Qarāja al-Ṣalāḥī (6), lord of Ṣarkhad.
He owned a residence by Bāb al-Ṣaghīr near the canal of al-Zalāqah. His mausoleum lies on the hillside, in a domed structure along the main road near the tomb of Ibn Tamīrk. al-ʿĀdil confirmed his son Yaʿqūb (7) in the lordship of Ṣarkhad.
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz the physician (8).
He died suddenly; he was the father of Saʿd al-Dīn, the Ashrafī court-physician. About him Ibn ʿUnayn (9) said:
(10) Alone— (11) with no congregation standing behind the preacher;
Death is upon us, and there is no physician—ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz is gone.
In this year there also died:
al-ʿAfīf ibn al-Darrajī (12), imam of the western Ḥanafī prayer-niche in the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus (13).
(1) The printed edition reads “from Ibn Abi al-Waqt,” but this is an error. Abu al-Waqt is ʿAbd al-Awwal ibn ʿIsa; his biography appeared under the year 553 in the previous volume of Wafayat.
(2) The biography of Abū al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzī appeared under the year 597 in the previous volume of Wafayat.
(3) The printed edition reads “bil-waʿẓ” (with admonition).
(4) Manuscript A reads “wasamaht,” which is a corruption.
(5) The printed edition reads “Bab al-Nasīrah,” and manuscript B reads “from the people of Basra”; both are incorrect. The correct reading, as established from manuscript A, is confirmed by his biographical sources, which place him in the well-known Ṣanniyya quarter.
(6) Biography of Qirāja al-Ṣalāḥī in Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (p. 62), Mufarrij al-Kurūb 3:175, and Tārīkh al-Islām 13:101.
(7) Abū Shāmah mentions him in his Dhayl (62–63): “His son, Nāṣir al-Dīn Yaʿqūb, arrived from the fortress of Sarghad to serve Sultan al-ʿĀdil in Jerusalem. He honored him and endowed him with whatever he possessed; then he died in AH 610 at the age of twenty-one years and three months.”
(8) Biography of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Ṭabīb in Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (p. 62).
(9) The biography of Ibn ʿAnīn will appear under the year 630 in Wafayat.
(10) Dīwān Ibn ʿAnīn (p. 243) and Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (p. 63).
(11) The printed edition and the Dīwān read “Farārī,” which is a corruption. The reading given here—based on manuscripts A and B and Dhayl al-Rawdatayn—was adopted by the Dīwān’s editor, Khalīl Mardam Bey, in his autograph, which is the correct one.
(12) Biography of al-ʿAfīf ibn al-Durajjī in Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (p. 64). Al-Bashār said: “He is ʿAfīf al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyā, Abū Muḥammad al-Durajjī al-Qurashī al-Dimashqī.” He is also covered by al-Zākī al-Munḏhirī in Al-Takmila (2:127) and al-Dhahabī in Tārīkh al-Islām (13:97).
(13) The printed edition reads “bi-Jāmiʿ Banī Umayya” (at the Umayyad Mosque).
