over him, and a number of people followed his lead (1).
[Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn] Abū Shāma (2) remarked: “What drove him to do that was the great anxiety he felt over the loss of his money and the slander against his reputation. A similar affair once befell me, yet Allah—exalted is He—protected me by His grace (3). After his death, al-Jamāl al-Miṣrī (4), the deputy of the treasury, took up the teaching post at the Amīniyya.”
Abū al-Ghanāʾim al-Markīsihlar (5) al-Baghdādī served alongside ʿIzz al-Dīn Najāḥ al-Sharābī and amassed considerable wealth. Whenever he acquired money he would buy property and register it in the name of a trusted companion. When death approached, he instructed that man to take charge of his children and spend on them from their inheritance. Not long afterward the trustee fell ill; he summoned witnesses to testify that everything in his hands belonged to the heirs of Abū al-Ghanāʾim. His own heirs, however, delayed bringing the witnesses, and before the testimony could be completed he was struck by apoplexy and died. Those heirs then seized all the funds and estates, giving the children of Abū al-Ghanāʾim nothing (6) of what (7) their father had left them.
Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī (8) ibn Saʿāda al-Fāriqī (9) studied jurisprudence in Baghdad. He served as muʿīd at the Niẓāmiyya, deputized in its teaching, and assumed the chair of the school founded by the Caliph’s mother. He was asked to act as deputy judge in place of Abū Ṭālib ibn al-Bukhārī (10) but at first refused; compelled to accept, he held the position only briefly. One day he entered a mosque, wrapped a woolen cloth around his head, dismissed the agents and guards (11) who accompanied him, and brought witnesses to attest that he was resigning the deputy judgeship. Thereafter he continued with his review lectures and teaching. May Allah have mercy on him.
On Friday, the twentieth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, the noble lady, mother of Sultan al-Malik al-Muʿaẓẓam ʿĪsā ibn al-ʿĀdil (12), passed away; she was buried in the domed shrine within the madrasa.
