Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

and he was Shafi‘i in jurisprudence; he had founded a magnificent madrasa for the Shafi‘i school (1). His outward conduct was commendable (2) and of the highest caliber, and the same was true of his inner character—may Allah have mercy on him.

Among the other notable figures who also died in that year were:

The great amir (3) Falak al-Din Abū Manṣūr Sulaymān b. Shirwah (4) b. Jaldak (5), the half-brother of al-Malik al-‘Ādil through their mother (6). He passed away on the twenty-ninth (7) of Muḥarram and was buried in his house, which he had turned (8) into a madrasa (9) inside Bāb al-Farādis, in the quarter of al-Iftarīs (10). To that foundation he endowed the two orchards of al-Khumān (11) in their entirety—may Allah accept it from him.

The judge Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn al-Shahrazūrī (12): [Abū al-Faḍāʾil al-Qāsim b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Qāsim al-Shahrazūrī] (13) of Mosul, Chief Judge of Baghdad. He was the nephew of Kamāl al-Dīn al-Shahrazūrī, Chief Judge of Damascus in the days of Nūr al-Dīn. When the latter died in the year seventy-six, during the reign of Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn (14), he bequeathed the judgeship to this nephew, who accordingly assumed it. Later he was removed in favor of Ibn Abī ʿAsrūn and was compensated with an ambassadorial mission to various kings. He then held the judgeship of his native city, Mosul; afterwards he was summoned to Baghdad and served there for two years and four (15)

(1) Manuscripts A and B read “lahum” (for them). (2) This phrase appears only in manuscript Ṭa. (3) In Ṭa the name appears as “ʿIlm al-Din Abu Mansur Sulayman ibn Shirwah ibn Jandar,” matching the notice in Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (p. 33). This suggests a confusion between ʿIlm al-Din Sulayman ibn Jandar, author of Azaz wa Bighras (biography in Wafayat al-Ayan for the year 587), and this Fulk al-Din. I also found in Wafayat al-Ayan (year 599, from Tarikh al-Islam) a biography of Fulk al-Din, the amir surnamed al-Mubariz Sulayman ibn [gap], maternal brother of Sultan al-Malik al-ʿAdil, buried in his Dar al-Fulkiyya (a school he endowed near Bab al-Faradis), as transmitted by Abu Shama (12:1180). I was unable to locate the passage mentioned by Abu Shama in Dhayl al-Rawdatayn at that time. (Bashar) (4) Dhayl al-Rawdatayn reads “Shirwah,” Munaadamat al-Atlal reads “Sharaf,” and Ṭa has the present reading. (5) The Ṭa edition and some sources read “Jandar.” (6) Ṭa reads “li-abi-hi” (to his father). (7) Ṭa reads “on the nineteenth.” (8) Ṭa reads “khattaha” while Dhayl al-Rawdatayn reads “waqfaha.” (9) The name of this school is al-Fulkiyya, named after the amir Fulk al-Din. (10) Ṭa reads “al-iftras”; the account of the school appears in Munaadamat al-Atlal (p. 137). (11) Ṭa reads “al-hamam,” cf. Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (p. 33). (12) His biography appears in Khiridat al-Sham (vol. 2, p. 343), Dhayl al-Rawdatayn (pp. 35–36), Wafayat al-Ayan (vol. 4, p. 244), and al-Ibar (vol. 4, p. 308). (13) Not found in manuscript B. (14) Ṭa reads “during the days of Salah al-Din.” (15) Ṭa reads “then he assumed [office].”
