Among the dignitaries who died in this year were:
The judge Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Musa, better known as Ibn al-Farrash (1). He was the qadi of the armies in Damascus, and the sultan used to send him on diplomatic missions (2) to the kings of distant realms. He died in Malatya.
The amir Sayf al-Din ‘Ali ibn Ahmad al-Mashtub (3) had been one of the companions of Asad al-Din Shirkuh; he took part with him in the three engagements that took place in Egypt (4). Thereafter he became one of Saladin’s leading (5) commanders. He was the acting governor (6) of Acre when the Franks seized it (7), and they captured him along with many others (8). He ransomed himself from them for fifty thousand dinars, and, after much effort, made his way (9) to the sultan while he was in Jerusalem. The sultan reimbursed him for most of the sum and appointed him deputy governor of Nablus. He died (10) on Sunday, the twenty-third (11) of Shawwal in the holy city of Jerusalem and was buried in his own house.
The ruler of the lands of Rūm, Qilij Arslan (12):
Among those who also died this year was the prince of the Rūm territories, ‘Izz al-Din Qilij (13) Arslan (14) ibn Mas‘ud ibn Qilij Arslan. He had divided all his dominions among his sons in the hope of winning their obedience; instead they opposed him, became haughty and tyrannical toward him, and his authority waned (15).
