money, pack-camels, horses, and mules. The camels alone numbered three thousand ⦗1⦘. Thanks to this sizeable haul ⦗2⦘ the Franks were greatly reinforced, which caused the Sultan extremely grave distress and filled him with fear of its consequences. The English set camel-drivers ⦗3⦘ over the camels, kharabandiyyah—muleteers—over the mules, and grooms over the horses. Thus emboldened, the king advanced, his confidence much increased, and resolved to besiege Jerusalem. He sent word to the Frankish kings ⦗4⦘ along the coast, summoning them together with the fighting men in their retinues.

The Sultan, for his part, arrayed his forces ⦗5⦘ and readied himself ⦗6⦘. He completed the wall, restored the moats, set up the siege engines and mangonels ⦗7⦘, and ordered the water sources around Jerusalem to be drained. On the night of Friday, the nineteenth of Jumada al-Akhira, the Sultan gathered his emirs—among them Abū al-Hayjāʾ “the Corpulent” ⦗8⦘, al-Mashṭūb, and the Asadiyyah in full strength ⦗9⦘—and consulted them about this dreadful, painful calamity that had overtaken him. They spoke at length, each giving his opinion. The secretary ʿImād suggested that they swear an oath to fight to the death at the Rock, as the Companions ⦗10⦘ had done; they accepted the proposal.

Throughout all this the Sultan remained silent, downcast, deep in thought; the assembly likewise fell silent, as though birds were perched upon their heads ⦗11⦘. Then he said:

“Praise be to Allah, and blessings ⦗12⦘ and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. Know that you are today the army and rampart of Islam. You are aware that the lives, wealth, and offspring of the Muslims hang upon your pledges of protection, and Allah—exalted is He—will question you about them on the Day of Resurrection. No other Muslims stand between this enemy and the servants and lands except you. If you turn your backs—and we seek Allah’s refuge—⦗13⦘ he will sweep through the land, destroy its people, seize wealth, children, and women; the cross will be worshipped in the mosques, the Quran and the prayer will be expelled from them, and all of that will rest upon your shoulders. It is you who have stepped forward to confront all of this, eating from the Muslims’ treasury so that you might repel their enemy and support their weak. The Muslims in every land are depending upon you. Peace.”
