—governor of Acre when the city was taken. He ransomed himself from them for fifty thousand dinars; the Sultan gave him a large share of that sum and appointed him governor of Nablus, where he died in Shawwal of this same year ⦗1⦘.
In Rabīʿ al-Ākhir the marquis, lord of Tyre—may Allah curse him—was assassinated. The King of England sent two fidāwiyyah (assassins) against him; they pretended to have embraced Christianity and stayed in the church until they found their chance and killed the marquis ⦗2⦘, and they too were killed. The King of England ⦗3⦘ then installed over Tyre his nephew Henry of Champagne ⦗4⦘—on his father’s side the son of the King of France’s sister, so the two kings were both his maternal uncles—may Allah curse them ⦗5⦘. When he ⦗6⦘ reached Tyre he ⦗7⦘ married the marquis’s widow only one night after her husband’s death, even though she was pregnant. Thereafter the King of England—may Allah curse him—who at that time was the greatest of the Frankish rulers ⦗12⦘, fell upon some scattered bands ⦗13⦘ of the Muslims. He attacked them by night, killed a great many, captured five hundred prisoners, and seized from them ⦗14⦘ a large amount of
