Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

him at the very outset of the battle, leaving him with only seventeen fighting men, yet he stood firm and patient, [the kettledrums beat without pause, and the trumpets and banners] (1) were unfurled overhead. The men then rallied, and victory was granted to the Muslims, [the counter-attack fell upon the unbelievers, and praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds] (2).

The Sultan next advanced with his forces and encamped outside Ascalon. Men of sound judgment advised him to demolish Ascalon, lest the infidels seize it and make it a bridgehead for taking Jerusalem—may Allah safeguard it—or lest (3) a struggle like the one at Acre, [or even worse] (4), should break out before its walls. The Sultan spent that night (5) pondering the matter; and when (6) dawn came, Allah had placed in his heart the conviction that its destruction (7) was the wiser course. He (8) said to those present, “By Allah, the death of all my children would be easier for me than the demolition of a single stone of it; but if its destruction (9) serves the welfare of the Muslims, then there is no harm in it.” He then summoned the governors and ordered them to pull the city down at once, before the routed enemy could reach it (10).

So the people set about dismantling it, while its inhabitants and all who were there wept over its beauty, the pleasantness of its dwellings, and the abundance of its fields (11) and orchards, its verdure, its running waters and its blossoms, [the profusion of its marble and the elegance of its buildings] (12). [Fires were kindled in its quarters and outskirts] (13); its palaces, houses, markets, and open squares were destroyed, and the produce that could neither be moved nor carried away was ruined. The devastation and burning continued from Jumada al-Akhir until the last day of Shaʿban of that year.

The Sultan departed from it (14) on the second of Ramadan, leaving it a level, barren plain with no landmark (15) remaining for anyone. He then passed through Ramla, demolished (16) its fortress, wrecked the church of Lod, visited Jerusalem, and returned swiftly to the camp. May Allah accept
