Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Thus, the truth to which we have all returned (1)
is borne out by the proofs of the transmitted reports and the Revelation;
Whoever does not take the Sacred Law for his guide
has been flung, through excessive ignorance, into bewildering error.

[Then the year 587 AH began]

In this year:
The King of France (2), the King of England (3), and several other maritime rulers (4) arrived to join the Franks and conspired to seize (5) Acre during this same year, as will be detailed below.

The year opened (6) while the severe siege of Acre remained unchanged (7) on both sides. The entry of the replacement troops (8) into the city had been completed, and al-Malik al-ʿĀdil was encamped beside the seashore so that both they and their provisions might enter in full—may Allah show them kindness.

On the night of the first of Rabiʿ al-Awwal of this year (9) the Muslims sallied out from Acre, stormed the Frankish camp, and killed a great many of them; they plundered (10) abundant booty and captured twelve (11) women. A large Frankish ship was wrecked (12); many of its passengers drowned (13) and the rest were taken prisoner. The lord of Homs, Asad al-Din Shirkuh ibn Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn Shirkuh (14), raided the Frankish livestock in the territory of Tripoli, driving off a large number of horses, cattle, and sheep. The reconnaissance force (15) likewise captured many Franks and killed them, while no Muslim was slain save a young eunuch whose horse had stumbled.

(1) Manuscript A reads “al-Haqq qaširna.” (2) Manuscript T reads “al-Faransīs” (the Franks). (3) Manuscripts A and B read inkliyah; Ibn al-Athīr (vol. 9, p. 213) has inklitār; al-Rawḍatayn (vol. 2, p. 182) has inklitīrah. (4) Manuscript T reads mulūk al-baḥr al-faranj (sea-kings of the Franks). (5) Absent in A. We have adopted the reading of T throughout the work since it is the common usage. (6) Found only in manuscript A. (7) Absent in manuscript T. (8) In B: al-balad (the town); in T: al-ʿaduww (the enemy). (9) Found only in manuscript T. (10) In B and T: “wa sabbū wa ghanamū shayʾan kathīran” (they raided and captured a great deal). (11) In manuscript T: “ithna ’ashar imra’ah” (twelve women), which is erroneous. (12) In B: “fa-nkasar” (it broke). (13) In T: “mā fīhi” (what is in it). (14) In B and T: “Asad al-Dīn ibn Shirkūh,” a scribal error. His biography appears under the death notices for the year 637 in this work. (15) In B and T: “al-Turk” (the Turks); the account is in al-Rawḍatayn (vol. 2, p. 183) and in al-Yazk: Muqaddimat al-Jaysh.
