with sheer ruin (1). Concluding peace with the Count (al-qumṣ) was one of the strongest factors (2) in the sultan’s victory over the Franks and one of the direst blows to strike them in both faith and worldly affairs. All praise and bounty belong to Allah (3).
Al-ʿImād the secretary (4) said: “Astrologers in every land were predicting the destruction of the world in Shaʿbān, when the six planets would converge in Libra, to be followed by a whirlwind-flood that would ravage every country. He related that some ignorant folk prepared for this by digging caves, tunnels, and underground passages in the earth out of fear of what was coming.”
Al-ʿImād the secretary (5) also said: “When the very night they had specified and unanimously agreed upon arrived, no night was ever seen to equal it in stillness, quiet, and serenity.” More than one person confirmed the same.
Poets composed fine verses refuting the astrologers with regard to this incident and others. Among them are the lines of ʿĪsā ibn Mawdūd (6), in the metre majzūʾ al-raml (7):
Tear up the calendar and the astral chart, for the secret now lies bare (8);
The calendar and the chart are nothing but dust and empty air (9).
You said the Seven would decree constraint, withholding, and giving,
And that once they descended into Libra the wind would seize dominion,
Stir (10) the sand until the whole expanse were filled with it,
Till the earth were engulfed in subsidence, ruin, and calamity (11),
And the plain become a wasteland, the mountain a naked crag (12).
