and he raises his hands to Allah and beseeches Him (1). For indeed (2) He—glorified and exalted be He—answers his supplication, grants him his request, and never allows him to lower his hands in disappointment; thus he prevails over us. They said: Such were the words of the unbelievers about him (may Allah have mercy on him) (3).
Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn Abū Shāmah relates (4) that King Nūr al-Dīn endowed the Maydān Orchard, apart from the grove that lay in front of it (5). He allocated one half of it for procuring perfume for the Great Mosque of Damascus, while the other half he divided into eleven shares: two shares for perfuming the madrasa he had founded for the Ḥanafīs, and the remaining nine (6) shares for perfuming nine mosques, namely:
1 – the Mosque of the Righteous on Mount Qasioun (7);
2 – the Citadel Jāmiʿ;
3 – Masjid ʿAṭiyyah (8);
4 – Masjid Ibn Labid in al-Fusqār;
5 – Masjid al-Ramāḥīn (9);
6 – the Suspended Mosque in the Goldsmiths’ Market (10);
7 – Masjid al-ʿAbbāsī (11) in al-Ṣāliḥiyyah (12);
8 – the hanging mosque of Dār al-Baṭṭīkh;
9 – the mosque that Nūr al-Dīn rebuilt beside the Jews’ synagogue.
Each of these mosques was to receive one share out of the eleven shares of that half (13).
