and eighty and four hundred—that is, 481 AH. His father, the ḥāfiẓ Muḥammad ibn Ṭāhir, (1) had him hear a vast number of narrations, and among what he transmitted was the Musnad of al-Shāfiʿī. [His death occurred] (2) in Hamadhan on Wednesday, the seventh of Rabiʿ al-Ākhir, when he was almost ninety.
Yūsuf the judge (3), Abū al-Ḥajjāj ibn al-Khallāl, overseer of the chancery [in the Egyptian domains] (4), was the teacher of al-Qāḍī al-Fāḍil in this craft. Al-Qāḍī al-Fāḍil studied under him and excelled (5) to the point that, when the shaykh grew too weak (6) to shoulder the responsibilities of the post because of old age, al-Qāḍī al-Fāḍil (7) performed its duties for him and looked after him and his household until (8) he died. Thereafter, [after his death] (9) he continued to show abundant kindness to the family—may Allah be pleased with them.
Yūsuf the caliph (10), al-Mustanjid bi-Allāh ibn al-Muqtafī ibn al-Mustazhir: mention (11) of his death and his biography has already been given under the events.
[Abū Naṣr ibn al-Mustazhir] (12): A few months later (13) his uncle Abū Naṣr ibn al-Mustazhir passed away; no offspring of al-Mustazhir remained after him. His death occurred on Tuesday, the twenty-eighth of Dhu al-Qaʿdah—may Allah Most High (14) have mercy on him.
[Then the year five hundred and sixty-seven began]
In it: the death of al-ʿĀḍid, [ruler of Egypt] (15).
