Ibn al-Jawzī adds: “On that very day I convened a gathering there, and thousands of people assembled.”
Among those who died this year, [from the eminent figures] (1):
• Asʿad (2) ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Muhtadī Billah, Abū Manṣūr. He heard (3) a great many ḥadith, was devout and upright, and remained in full possession of his senses and strength until his death. He had passed the age of one hundred by roughly seven years—may Allah have mercy on him.
• Abū Muḥammad (4) ʿAbd Allah [ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAlī] (5) ibn Khalaf ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Lakhmī al-Andalusī al-Rushāṭī (6), the ḥāfiẓ (7). He authored the work Iqtibās al-Anwār wa Iltimās al-Azhār fī Ansāb al-Ṣaḥābah wa Ruwwāt al-Āthār, one of the finest of the large compilations. He was killed as a martyr on the morning of Friday, the twentieth of Jumādā, in Almería (8).
• Naṣr Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Qawī, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Lādhiqī al-Miṣṣīṣī, the Shāfiʿī (9). He studied jurisprudence under Shaykh Naṣr ibn Ibrāhīm al-Maqdisī in Ṣūr, and there he heard ḥadith from him and from Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb. He also received ḥadith in Baghdad and al-Anbār. He was one of (10) the senior shaykhs of Syria, proficient in both uṣūl and furūʿ (principles and subsidiary rulings). [His death occurred in this very year] (11), at the age of ninety-four—may Allah have mercy on him.
