That same year (1) Emir Najm al-Dīn Ayyūb, acting on behalf of Zankī, came to the ruler of Damascus. The ruler handed the citadel over to him and appointed him his amir (2) in Damascus.
In that year as well, Sultan Masʿūd executed his chamberlain ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṭughrilbak, then killed ʿAbbās, lord of Rayy, throwing his head to ʿAbbās’s own men. The people were alarmed and plundered ʿAbbās’s tents. This ʿAbbās was counted among the famed men of valor. When the Batinis (3) murdered Jawhar, he kept killing them until he built a minaret in Rayy out of their severed heads.
That year likewise, the naqīb al-nuqabāʾ of Baghdad, Muḥammad ibn Ṭirād al-Zaynabī, died, and (4) after him ʿAlī (5) ibn Ṭalḥa al-Zaynabī assumed the office.
Also that year a wall collapsed upon the Caliph’s daughter—she had reached full womanhood—and she died; the dignitaries attended her funeral.
[That same year the vizier Niẓām al-Dīn ibn Jahīr performed the pilgrimage] (6).
[Among the notable deaths that year were:]
Zankī ibn Āq Sunqur. A portion of his biography has already been mentioned [in the events] (7); he was the father of Nūr al-Dīn Maḥmūd the Martyr (8). Shaykh [Shihāb al-Dīn] (9) [Abū Shāma] (10) has dealt with him at length in al-Rawdatayn, both in prose and verse. May Allah have mercy on him.
Saʿd al-Khayr ibn Muḥammad ibn Sahl ibn Saʿd, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Maghribī al-Andalusī al-Anṣārī (11): he travelled from al-Andalus to China, heard hadith, studied jurisprudence under al-Ghazālī, and amassed valuable books, and others transmitted narrations from him.
