Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

In the same year: a call was made to perform the funeral prayer for a pious man, so the people gathered at the madrasa of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir. It so happened, however, that the man sneezed and regained consciousness. Shortly thereafter the bier of another man was brought in, and that same large congregation offered the prayer over him (1).

In the same year: the water levels fell throughout the world.

In the same year: the future ruler of Ḥamāh, Taqī al-Dīn ʿUmar b. Shāhanshāh b. Ayyūb b. Shādhī (2), was born.

Among the notable persons who died that year was Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Faraj, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Harbī (3), one of the devout ascetics. He transmitted hadith and enjoyed states of true righteousness, to the point that people said he could be seen at ʿArafāt in certain years even though he had not performed the pilgrimage that year.

Also: ʿAbd al-Salām b. al-Faḍl, Abū (4) al-Qāsim al-Jīlī (5). He studied hadith, received his legal training under al-Ilkiyā al-Harrāsī, and excelled in both the principles and the branches of jurisprudence, among other sciences. He served as qāḍī of Basra and was counted among its finest judges. May Allah have mercy on him (6).

[Then came the year 535 AH.]

In it: the burdah (the Prophet’s cloak) and the qadīb (staff) reached Baghdad. They had been taken (7) from al-Mustarshid in 529 AH (8), after which Sultan Sanjar kept them with him until returning them in this very year.

(4) In edition A: “bin.” (5) His biography appears in al-Muntaẓam (10:87) and Tārīkh al-Islām (11:613). (6) Found only in edition B. (7) Not found in T. (8) In T: “and they were with al-Mustarshid when he fled in 29 AH,” which is problematic since al-Mustarshid neither fled but was captured in battle and later assassinated. In A: “and they had been taken with al-Mustarshid in 29 AH.” The preferred reading, as given by Ibn al-Athīr (quoted by the author), is “and they had been taken from al-Mustarshid” (al-Kāmil 11:79, Ṣādir ed.). Al-Dhahabī, however, reports that al-Burda and al-Qudayb were with al-Rashīd when Bāẓir of Isfahan was killed (Tārīkh al-Islām 11:535), a plausible scenario since al-Rashīd may have taken them to Mosul and they were with him at his death in 532 AH. God knows best. (Bashār)
