Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Ali (1) ibn al-Mustazhir bi’-Llah, brother of the caliph al-Mustarshid: he died in Rajab [of this year] (2) at the age of twenty-one. The beating of the kettledrums was suspended and the people sat for condolence gatherings for several days.

Muhammad (3) ibn Ahmad ibn Abi al-Fadl al-Mahiyani, one of the foremost Shafiʿi scholars: he studied jurisprudence under Imam al-Haramayn and others, travelled to many lands in pursuit of knowledge and hadith, then taught, issued legal rulings, and engaged in debate. He passed away [in this year] (4) [when he was nearly ninety] (5), and was buried in the village of Mahiyan (6) in the region of Marw. May Allah have mercy on him.

Mahmud (7) the sultan, son of the sultan Muhammad ibn Malikshah ibn Alp Arslan ibn Dawud ibn Mikail ibn Saljuq: he was among the best of kings, distinguished by forbearance and composure [as well as generosity and acts of kindness] (8). Condolence sessions were held for him over three days; may Allah pardon him.

Hibat Allah (9) ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad ibn al-ʿAbbas ibn al-Husayn (10), Abu al-Qasim al-Shaybani: transmitter of the Musnad [through Abu ʿAli ibn al-Mudhhib] (11) from Abu Bakr ibn Malik, from ʿAbd Allah [ibn Ahmad] (12)

(11/430) He prefaced it with: “And Ibn al-Jawzi, may God bless him, said.” Ibn al-Athir (al-Kamil, 10/671) and Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi (Mir’at al-Zaman, 8/139) reproached Abu al-Faraj for attributing it to Shaykh Hammad al-Dabbas. Many distinguished scholars praised him, among them ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Hamza al-Shahid, Ahmad ibn Salih al-Jili, Abu Sa‘d al-Sam‘ani, Abu al-Najib ‘Abd al-Qahir al-Suhrawardi, al-Mubarak ibn Kamil al-Khaffaf, and others. He was one of the foremost teachers of Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir (may God have mercy on him), and al-Dhahabi also commended him; his stance toward the Sufis is well known. (Bashar).
