Muslim and al-Nasā’ī likewise recorded the report through Shuʿbah.
Muslim also said: “Muḥammad ibn Salamah al-Murādī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ; he said: Rabiʿah ibn Yazīd related to me from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū al-Dardā’, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and prayed, and we heard him saying: “I seek refuge in Allah from you; I curse you with the curse of Allah”—three times. Then he stretched out his hand as though grasping something. When he finished the prayer we said, “O Messenger of Allah, we heard you say something in the prayer that we had never heard before, and we saw you extend your hand.” He replied: “The enemy of Allah, Iblīs, came with a flaming brand to hurl it at my face. I said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you’ three times, then I said, ‘I curse you with the complete curse of Allah,’ and he did not retreat after three times. I then wanted to seize him. By Allah, were it not for the supplication of our brother Solomon, he would have been bound so that the children of Madīnah could play with him.”’”
Al-Nasā’ī also transmitted it from Muḥammad ibn Salamah with the same chain.
Aḥmad said: “Abū Aḥmad narrated to us; Misrah ibn Maʿbad narrated to us; Abū ʿUbayd—the companion of Sulaymān—narrated to us. He said: I saw ʿAtā’ ibn Yazīd al-Laythī standing in prayer, and I started to pass in front of him, but he pushed me back and said: ‘Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to lead the dawn prayer while he (Abū Saʿīd) was behind him. He recited, and the recitation became confused for him. When he finished the prayer he said, “If only you had seen me and Iblīs! I reached out with my hand and kept choking him until I felt the coolness of his saliva between these two fingers”—and he indicated his thumb and the finger next to it—“and were it not for the supplication of my brother Solomon, he would now be tied to one of the pillars of the mosque, and the children of Madīnah would be playing with him. So whoever among you can prevent anyone from passing between him and the qiblah, let him do so.”’”
Abū Dāwūd recorded from this report—beginning with the words “So whoever among you can …” to the end—through Aḥmad ibn Suraij from Aḥmad al-Zubayrī.
More than one of the early scholars have mentioned that Solomon had a thousand women: seven hundred wives taken with dowries and three hundred concubines; others said the reverse—three hundred free women and seven hundred bondmaids. He possessed an extraordinary capacity for intimate relations.
Al-Bukhārī said: “Khālid ibn Makhlad narrated to us; Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: ‘Solomon son of David said, “Tonight I will go around to seventy women, each of whom will give birth to a cavalryman who will fight in the cause of Allah.” His companion said to him, “Say: If Allah wills.” But he did not say it, and none of the women conceived anything except one child who was born still, with half a body.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Had he said, If Allah wills, they would all have fought in the cause of Allah.’”
