he possessed abundant wealth and gave lavishly in charity; he was dignified, noble-minded, and enjoyed high standing with the Caliph. He transmitted ḥadīth and preached, his delivery graceful and his speech delightful. He died in Rayy in this same year (1), and Allah knows best.
Then the year 515 AH began. During it:
• The Sultan granted Emir Maḥmūd Ilghāzī the city of Mayyāfāriqīn, and it remained in the hands of his sons until Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb captured it in 580 AH (2).
• He also (3) assigned Aq Sunqur al-Bursuqī the city of Mosul, and (4) ordered him (5) to wage war against the Franks.
• In the same year Malik ibn Bahrām, a nephew of Ilghāzī, besieged Edessa (al-Ruhā). He captured its ruler, Joscelin (6) the Frank, along with several of his leading companions, and imprisoned them in the fortress of Khartbart.
• A black wind swept Egypt, [lasting three days and destroying great numbers of people, beasts of burden, and livestock] (7).
• A severe earthquake struck the Ḥijāz; as a result (8) the Yemeni Corner—may Allah increase its honor—was shaken and part of it collapsed, and part of the Sacred Precinct of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [may my father and mother be his ransom] (9) in al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah also fell.
• A man of ʿAlid descent appeared in Mecca; he had studied at the Niẓāmiyya in jurisprudence and other fields, enjoining right and forbidding wrong, and many people followed him (10). The city’s ruler, Ibn Abī Hāshim, therefore banished him to (11) Bahrain.
• The Sultan’s residence in Isfahān burned down; nothing of the [furniture and bedding] (12), jewels, gold, or silver remained except the red rubies. Innā lillāh wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).
