Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

[Then the year 503 AH began]

  • In it:
The Franks—may Allah curse them—seized the city of Tripoli (1). They massacred the men, carried off the women and children as captives, and plundered goods and wealth. Ten nights later they captured the city of Jbeil (2). There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the All-Great, the Most High (3).

Fakhr al-Mulk ibn ʿAmmar (4) fled from them and headed for the ruler of Damascus, Tughtekin, who received him with honor and granted him extensive lands.

  • Also in it:
Some of the Bāṭiniyya (5) attacked the vizier Abū Naṣr Aḥmad (6) ibn Niẓām al-Mulk. They wounded him, but the assailant was captured, given wine to drink, and he confessed against a group of the Bāṭiniyya; they were arrested and executed (7).

  • That year the amir Qīmāz led the pilgrimage.

[Among the notable deaths this year]

Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad, Abū Bakr al-ʿUlabi (8)(9).

He earned his living plastering walls; he never painted images and never accepted anything from anyone. Instead, he lived off property he owned, selling parts of it for his subsistence. He heard ḥadith from the qadi Abū Yaʿlā and studied a measure of jurisprudence (10) under him. Whenever he performed ḥajj he would visit the graves in Mecca, and when he reached the grave of Shaykh al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ (11) he would draw a line beside it with his staff and say:

(1) In manuscript A alone. (2) In edition T: “Jabla.” This is a scribal error. The report appears in Ibn al-Athir (vol. 8, p. 259) and al-Ibar (vol. 4, p. 6). (3) In edition T alone. (4) Previously noted under the events of 501 AH. (5) In manuscript A: “wa thabata.” (6) His biography is given in Wafayat al-A‘yan for the year 544 in this volume. (7) In edition T the wording reads: “He was wounded; then the Batini was seized, given wine to drink, and he confessed.” (8) His biography is found in Tabaqat Ibn Abi Ya‘la (vol. 2, p. 255), al-Muntazam (vol. 9, p. 163), Dhayl Tabaqat al-Hanabila Ibn Rajab (vol. 1, p. 104), and al-Manhaj al-Ahmad (vol. 2, p. 222). (9) In manuscripts A and T the reading is al-‘Alawi; in Tabaqat Ibn Abi Ya‘la and al-Muntazam (vol. 9, p. 163) it appears as al-‘Ulthi. This form follows al-Dhahabi’s autograph in Tarikh al-Islam (vol. 11, p. 43) and in al-Shadharat (vol. 4, p. 6) (Bishr). (10) In manuscript A: “shay’an.” (11) al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad ibn Mas‘ud al-Tamimi al-Taliqani, the renowned ascetic. In his early life he was a daring highwayman before his repentance. He went to Kufa and studied hadith there, then moved to Mecca, where he resided until his death in 187 AH. His biography is given in Wafayat al-A‘yan (vol. 4, pp. 47–50), al-Ibar (vol. 1, p. 298), and Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (vol. 8, p. 29).
