to fight the Franks, and some of the army moved out to the western outskirts of the city⦗1⦘. Yet this resolve soon collapsed when word reached them that the Franks numbered a million fighting men—lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāh (there is no might nor power except through Allah). That year the pilgrims were led by Khumār Takin.
Among the distinguished persons who died during it were:
• Tirād ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī⦗2⦘ ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm the Imām ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās, known as Abū al-Fawāris, son of Abū al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Tammām. He was descended from Zaynab daughter of Sulaymān ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās—she being the mother of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm the Imām ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās⦗3⦘. He heard a vast number of hadith and the principal compilations, and transmitted unique reports from many shaykhs. Students journeyed to him from distant lands, and he dictated hadith in various cities. Scholars and dignitaries attended his sessions—Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Dāmghānī among them—and he served as naqīb of the ʿAbbāsids for a long period. He died this year, a little over ninety years old, and was buried in the Cemetery of the Martyrs⦗4⦘. May Allah Most High have mercy on him.
• Al-Muẓaffar, son of Raʾīs al-Ruʾasāʾ Abū al-Qāsim ibn al-Muslima, Abū al-Fatḥ⦗5⦘. His house was a gathering place for people of learning, piety, and letters; Shaykh Abū Isḥāq al-Shīrāzī passed away there. When Abū al-Fatḥ himself died, he was buried beside Shaykh Abū Isḥāq in his tomb. May Allah Most High show him mercy.
Then the year 492 AH began.
In it: the Franks—may Allah humiliate them—captured Jerusalem. At mid-morning on Friday, with seven days remaining in Shaʿbān 492 AH, the Franks—may Allah curse them—about a million strong, overran the Holy City, and within its precincts slaughtered more than seventy thousand Muslims⦗6⦘:
“so they ravaged the very homes, and it was a promise fulfilled” (Quran 17:5),
“and to destroy utterly whatever they overtook” (Quran 17:7).
Ibn al-Jawzī said⦗7⦘:
