[Among the notable deaths that occurred this year]
Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥayd (1), Abū Manṣūr al-Nīsābūrī.
He maintained that he was descended from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān. He transmitted ḥadīth from Abū Bakr ibn al-Mudhhab, was deemed reliable, and died in Muḥarram (2) of this year, nearly eighty years old.
Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Muhtadī billāh, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Hāshimī (3), the preacher of the Manṣūr Mosque.
He was among those who wore the tall ceremonial caps. He related ḥadīth from Ibn Zarqawayh and others, and al-Khaṭīb narrated from him. Upright and trustworthy, he testified before Ibn Mākūlā and Ibn al-Dāmghānī, who both accepted his testimony. He died this year at the age of eighty and was buried near the grave of Bishr al-Ḥāfī—may Allah Most High have mercy on him.
Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Shādah ibn Jaʿfar (4), Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Iṣfahānī, the judge of Dujayl.
A follower of the Shāfiʿī school, he had studied it with Abū ʿUmar ibn Mahdī (5). He passed away in Baghdad and was carried to Dujayl [a district of Wāsiṭ].
[Then the year 465 AH began.]
On Thursday, the eleventh of Muḥarram, Abū al-Wafā ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl al-ʿAqīlī, the Ḥanbalī, appeared at the Dīwān. He had drawn up a written declaration testifying to his repentance from iʿtizāl and from mixing with its adherents, and to his withdrawal of the view that al-Ḥallāj belonged to the people of truth and goodness. He also revoked the booklet he had composed in defense of that view, affirming that al-Ḥallāj had been executed—by unanimous agreement of the scholars of his age—on account of his zandaqa (heresy); that they were in the right for killing him and for the charges they had leveled, while he himself had been in error. A group of state secretaries witnessed his statement. From the Dīwān he went to the residence of the noble Sharīf Abū Jaʿfar, greeted him, made peace with him, apologized to him, and honored him. Praise and thanks belong to Allah for His grace and favor.
