Al-Suddi also narrated—on the authority of Abū Mālik and Saʿīd ibn Jubayr—that David, peace be upon him, died suddenly on a Saturday.
Ishāq ibn Bishr reported, through Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, that David, peace be upon him, passed away at the age of one hundred years, and that his death occurred suddenly on a Wednesday.
Abū al-Sakan al-Hijrī said, “Abraham the Friend died suddenly, David died suddenly, and his son Solomon died suddenly—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon them all.” Ibn ʿAsākir related this report (1).
It is also related that the Angel of Death came to him while he was descending from his prayer chamber. David said, “Let me go down or go up.” The angel replied, “O Prophet of Allah, the years, the months, the traces, and the allotted provisions have all come to an end (2).” David thereupon fell in prostration on one of the steps of that stairway, and his soul was taken while he was prostrating.
Ishāq ibn Bishr said: Zāfir (3) ibn Sulaymān informed us, from Abū Sulaymān the Palestinian, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: “The people attended the funeral of David, peace be upon him, and they sat in the blazing sun on a sweltering summer day. On that day forty thousand monks wearing hooded cloaks escorted his bier, in addition to the rest of the people, and after Moses and Aaron no one had died among the Children of Israel whose loss caused them greater grief than David’s.
“The intense heat (4) scorched them, so they called out to Solomon, peace be upon him, to hasten because of what (5) they were suffering from the heat. They cried out to Solomon, peace be upon him, in their distress.
“Solomon came out again and called to the birds: ‘Shade the people only from the direction of the sun and withdraw from the side of the wind.’ They complied, and the people remained in shade while the breeze blew over them. That was among the first signs the people witnessed of Solomon’s dominion (7).”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā said: Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to me, from al-Haytham ibn Ḥumayd, from al-Waḍīn ibn ʿAtāʾ, from Naṣr ibn ʿAlqamah, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, on the authority of Abū al-Dardāʾ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said—
