Allah the Exalted says:
“So We forgave him that, and surely for him with Us is nearness and a goodly return.”
That is: on the Day of Resurrection he will enjoy an intimate station—an approach by which Allah draws him close to the precincts of His holiness.
This meaning is confirmed by the ḥadith:
“The just will be upon pulpits of light at the right hand of the All-Merciful—both of His hands are right hands—those who are fair in their families, in their judgments and in whatever they are entrusted with.”
Imām Aḥmad relates in his Musnad:
Yahyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Faḍl reported to us; from ʿAṭiyyah; from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“The people most beloved to Allah on the Day of Resurrection and the closest to Him in station will be a just leader, while the people most hateful to Allah on that Day and the most severely punished will be a tyrannical leader.”
Al-Tirmidhī transmitted it through the same chain from Faḍl ibn Marzūq al-Agharr and remarked: “We do not know it raised to the Prophet except through this route.”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: Abū Zurʿah related to us; ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Abī Ziyād related to us; Sayyār related to us; Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān related to us—I heard Mālik ibn Dīnār, regarding Allah’s words: “and surely for him with Us is nearness and a goodly return,” say:
“David’s station on the Day of Resurrection will be at the foot of the Throne. Then Allah will say: ‘O David, glorify Me today with that gentle, melodious voice by which you used to extol Me in the world.’
He will reply: ‘How can I, when that voice has been taken from me?’
Allah will say: ‘I restore it to you today.’
Thereupon David raises a voice that drains the bliss of the inhabitants of Paradise.”
[Allah further says:]
“O David, We have made you a vicegerent on earth, so judge between the people with truth and do not follow desire lest it lead you away from the path of Allah. Indeed, those who stray from the path of Allah will have a severe punishment for having forgotten the Day of Reckoning.” (Ṣād 38:26)
Though directed to David, this address is meant for all holders of authority and judges among mankind: they are commanded to rule with justice and to follow the revelation sent down by Allah, not the whims and opinions of men. Whoever chooses another course and judges by other than what Allah has revealed is threatened in this verse.
David—peace be upon him—was the exemplar of his time in justice, abundant worship, and varied devotional acts. Scarcely an hour of the night or the day passed without someone from his household engaged in worship, as Allah says:
“Work, O family of David, in gratitude—yet few of My servants are truly grateful.” (Sabaʾ 34:13)
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Bassām narrated to us; Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī narrated to us; from
