Al-Khaṭīb said: “He was truthful and alert. Toward the end of his life he moved to Mecca, settled there, and died there in Shawwal of this year.”
ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abī al-Fath (1) Aḥmad ibn ʿUthmān ibn al-Faraj ibn al-Azhar, Abū al-Qāsim al-Azhari, the renowned ḥāfiẓ and ḥadith scholar, also known as Ibn al-Sawādī (2).
He heard hadith from Abū Bakr ibn Mālik and many others whose names would take too long to list. He was reliable and truthful, devout, sound in creed, and of excellent conduct. He died on the night of Tuesday, the nineteenth of Ṣafar this year, at the age of eighty years and ten days.
King Jalal al-Dawlah (3) Abū Ṭāhir ibn Bahāʾ al-Dawlah ibn ʿAḍud al-Dawlah ibn Būyah the Daylamite, ruler of Baghdad and other territories.
He had a deep affection for the ascetics, visiting them and asking for their prayers. He was struck by misfortune many times: the Turks rebelled against him on several occasions, expelled him from his residence, and once even drove him completely out of Baghdad. Yet he would return and they would be reconciled with him. This year he was afflicted with a liver ailment and died of it on the night of Friday, the fifth of Shaʿbān, at the age of fifty-one years and some months. He had governed Baghdad for sixteen years and eleven months (4).
Then the year 436 AH began.
In it: King Abū Kālījār entered Baghdad and ordered the drum to be beaten at the times of the five daily prayers. None of the previous kings had done this; for ʿAḍud al-Dawlah it had been beaten only three times, and it was never beaten at all five times except for the caliph. Abū Kālījār entered in Ramadan. He distributed lavish sums to the troops and sent the caliph ten thousand dinars. He bestowed robes of honour upon the commanders of the armies—namely al-Basāsīrī, al-Nishāwarī, and al-Humām Abū al-Liqāʾ. The caliph granted him the title Muḥyī al-Dawlah. The khuṭbah was proclaimed in his name in many lands at the command of their rulers, and it was proclaimed for him in Hamadhan; the deputies of Ṭughril Beg retained no authority there.
