Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Muʾaddib (1)—better known as Abū Muḥammad al-Khallāl—studied the Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī with Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad al-Kushmihīnī and heard other works as well. He died in Jumādā I and was buried at Bāb Ḥarb.

ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn (Bishrān ibn) (2) Muḥammad ibn Bishr ibn Mihrān (3), Abū al-Qāsim the preacher, received hadith from al-Najjād, Daʿlaj ibn Aḥmad, al-Ājirī, and others. He was reliable and truthful. Formerly he served as a legal witness but abandoned the post—spurning worldly gain (4) and out of fear of Allah. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year, having passed ninety. His funeral prayer was held in the Rusāfah congregational mosque amid a large crowd, and he was laid to rest beside Abū Ṭālib al-Makkī, as he had stipulated.

Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Khalaf ibn al-Farrāʾ (5), Abū Khāzim—brother of the judge Abū Yaʿlā al-Ḥanbalī—heard hadith from al-Dāraqutnī and Ibn Shāhīn. Al-Khaṭīb said: “There was nothing objectionable about him; I saw autograph copies bearing his audition notes. Later, however, we learned that he confused narrations while in Egypt: he bought loose folios from booksellers and reported from them, and he inclined toward iʿtizāl (Muʿtazilite theology).” He died in Muḥarram of this year in Tinnīs, Egypt.

Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allah (6), Abū Bakr al-Dīnwārī the ascetic, led a life of austerity. Ibn al-Qazwīnī praised him, and Jalāl al-Dawlah, the ruler of Baghdad, used to visit him. On one occasion he asked the ruler to abolish the market toll (maks) on salt, whose annual revenue amounted to two thousand dinars; Jalāl al-Dawlah relinquished it for his sake. When he died, the townspeople gathered en masse for his funeral, the prayer was performed over him several times, and he was buried at Bāb Ḥarb.

Al-Faḍl ibn Manṣūr (7), Abū al-Riḍā—known as Ibn al-Ẓarīf—was a witty poet; among his refined and exquisite verse are the lines:

(1) Tarikh Baghdad (vol. 8, p. 108); al-Muntazam (vol. 8, p. 102); Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala (vol. 17, p. 597). (2) The phrase “ma bayna al-hasiratayn” is an interpolation from the biographical sources, without which the text is incoherent (Bashar). (3) Tarikh Baghdad (vol. 10, p. 432); al-Muntazam (vol. 8, p. 102); Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala (vol. 17, p. 450); al-Nujum al-Zahira (vol. 5, p. 30); Shadharat al-Dhahab (vol. 3, p. 246). (4) In the printed edition it reads “anhu,” which is incorrect, since the intended meaning is “testimony.” Our reading conforms with that in Tarikh al-Khatib (Bashar). (5) Tarikh Baghdad (vol. 2, p. 252); al-Muntazam (vol. 8, p. 102). (6) al-Muntazam (vol. 8, p. 102). (7) al-Muntazam (vol. 8, p. 103); al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh (vol. 9, p. 466).
