Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Muslim (1) likewise recorded this ḥadīth through the chain of Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The man who will most enrage Allah on the Day of Resurrection, the vilest of men, is one who styles himself ‘King of Kings.’ Dominion belongs to Allah alone—Exalted is He.”

Imām Aḥmad (2) said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us; ʿAwf narrated from Khallās, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Allah’s anger is most intense against the one whom a prophet has slain, and Allah’s anger is most intense against a man who calls himself ‘King of Kings.’ Dominion belongs to Allah alone—Exalted is He.”

Allah Most High knows best what is correct.

[Among the notable people who died this year]

Abū Manṣūr (3) ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Thaʿālibī of Nīshāpūr.

He was an authority in language, historical reports, and the chronicles of peoples—gifted, prolific, and beneficial. He produced large works in both verse and prose, on eloquence and rhetoric. His greatest book is Yatīmat al-Dahr fī Maḥāsin Ahl al-ʿAṣr (The Orphan of the Age on the Merits of the People of Our Time) (4), about which someone said:

The verses of the Yatīmah—
Virgin thoughts of ancient days;
Their authors died, yet it lived on—
Thus was it named “the Orphan.”

He was called al-Thaʿālibī because he was a furrier who stitched fox pelts. He composed many graceful poems, was born in 350 AH, and died in this year (5).

Al-Ustādh Abū Manṣūr ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn Ṭāhir ibn Muḥammad al-Baghdādī (6), the Shāfiʿī jurist.

He was one of the foremost imams in both fundamentals and subsidiary rulings. Proficient in many disciplines—among them arithmetic and the laws of inheritance—he possessed considerable wealth, all of which he spent on the people of knowledge. He authored works across the sciences and taught seventeen subjects. He studied under al-Ustādh Abū Isḥāq al-Isfarāyīnī, and from him learned Nāṣir al-Marwazī and others. May Allah, Exalted is He, have mercy on him and on us by His grace and generosity; He is sufficient for me and the best Guardian. (7)
