Then came the year 390 AH.
In this year a deposit of gold was discovered in the land of Sijistān: people sank shafts into it like wells and drew out red gold.
That same year the amir Abū Naṣr ibn Bakhtiyār, ruler of the province of Fārs, was killed, whereupon Bahāʾ al-Dawla took possession of the territory.
Also in this year the caliph al-Qādir biʾllāh conferred the judiciary of Wāsiṭ and its districts upon Abū Ḥāzim Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Wāsiṭī. His patent of appointment was read aloud in the Palace of the Caliphate, and al-Qādir composed for him a fine and lengthy letter of counsel, the full text of which Ibn al-Jawzī reproduced in his work al-Muntaẓam ⦗1⦘. It contains excellent admonitions, commands, and prohibitions ⦗2⦘.
Among the notable figures who died this year:
• Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ⦗3⦘ ibn Abī Mūsā, Abū Bakr al-Hāshimī, a Mālikī jurist and judge in al-Madāʾin and elsewhere. He used to deliver sermons in the Manṣūr Mosque, had heard a great many ḥadith, and large numbers transmitted from him by way of al-Dāraqutnī’s selections. He was chaste, upright, trustworthy, and devout. He died in Muḥarram of this year at the age of seventy-five.
• ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Yaḥyā, Abū al-Qāsim al-Daqqāq, known as Ibn Janiqa ⦗4⦘. The distinguished scholar al-Qāḍī Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Farrāʾ—his grandson ⦗5⦘—said: “The correct form is Jalīqa, with a lām, not a nūn.” He listened to ḥadith with sound audition, and al-Azhari and al-ʿAtīqī transmitted from him. Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Fawāris ⦗6⦘ said: “He was trustworthy, reliable, and of fine character; we never saw his like in his field.” May Allah have mercy on him.
• al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Khalaf ⦗7⦘ ibn al-Farrāʾ, the father of the judge Abū Yaʿlā. He was righteous, a jurist of the school of Abū Ḥanīfa, possessed ḥadith with full chains of transmission, and his son Abū Khāzim ⦗8⦘ Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated from him.
