Ibn Khallikān said: He passed away at Rayy in that same year, at about sixty years of age, and was carried to Isfahān—may Allah Most High show him mercy. (1)
al-Ḥasan b. Ḥāmid b. al-Ḥasan b. Ḥāmid (2), Abū Muḥammad the man of letters, was a well-to-do poet (3), lavish in generosity. [He transmitted ḥadīth from ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Saʿīd al-Mawṣilī, and was himself transmitted from by al-Ṣūrī; he was truthful and reliable.] (4) He was the one who hosted al-Mutanabbī in his house when the poet arrived in Baghdad, treated him with great kindness, and covered all his expenses, prompting al-Mutanabbī to say to him, “Were I a merchant of praise, you would be the man I praised.”
Abū Muḥammad, for his part, was a consummate poet. Among his fine verses are:
I purchased loftiest virtues, never waiting for
their market to slacken, nor for a second fair to rise;
I am no trader who buys only when prices fall—
whenever the price is high, my eagerness is higher still. (5)
Ibn Shāhīn the preacher (6)—ʿUmar b. Aḥmad b. ʿUthmān b. Aḥmad b. Ayyūb b. Zadhān (7), Abū Ḥafṣ, widely known as Ibn Shāhīn—heard a vast amount of ḥadīth and related from al-Baghandī, Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd, al-Baghawī, Ibn Ṣāʿid, and many others. He was trustworthy and upright, lived on the eastern side of Baghdad, and produced numerous useful works. It is said that he authored three hundred and thirty compositions, among them: a Tafsīr (Qurʾānic exegesis) in 1,000 fascicles; a Musnad (ḥadīth collection) in 1,500 fascicles; a Tārīkh (chronicle) in 150 fascicles; and a work on Zuhd (asceticism) in 100 fascicles. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, having reached nearly ninety years of age—may Allah Most High have mercy upon him.
