al-ʿAmīd (1). He then wrote to his cousin ʿAḍud al-Dawlah b. Rukn al-Dawlah, but the latter was slow to respond. He appealed to ʿImrān b. Shāhīn, who gave him no answer, and he reached out to Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān, who openly promised help while secretly aiming to seize Baghdad for himself.
The Turks left Baghdad with a large host, taking with them the caliph al-Tāʾiʿ and his father al-Muṭīʿ. When they reached Wāsiṭ, al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh died; a few days later Subuktagīn also died. Both were carried back to Baghdad. The Turks then rallied around an amir named Aftakīn, gathered their forces, and confronted Bakhtiyār; his position grew extremely weak. His cousin ʿAḍud al-Dawlah gained the upper hand, stripped him of the dominion of Iraq, and his power was shattered and dispersed.
In the same year the khuṭbah was delivered for al-Muʿizz the Fatimid in the Two Sanctuaries—Mecca and the Prophetic Medina (2).
That year, a band of Banū Hilāl together with other Bedouins attacked the pilgrims: they killed many of them and prevented the rest from performing the ḥajj that year—may Allah not reward them with good.
In this year the chronicle of Thābit b. Sinān b. Thābit b. Qurrah comes to an end; it had begun with the accession of al-Muqtadir in 295 AH.
A severe earthquake also struck Wāsiṭ in the same year.
The pilgrimage that year was led by the sharif Abū Aḥmad al-Mūsawī. No one else performed the ḥajj except those who accompanied him along the Iraqi route; although people were taxed on the road to Medina, their pilgrimage was nevertheless completed—praise and thanks be to Allah for His grace and favor.
[Among those who died this year]
• al-ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥusayn (3): Abū al-Faḍl al-Shīrāzī, vizier to ʿIzz al-Dawlah Bakhtiyār b. Muʿizz al-Dawlah b. Būyah. He was a zealous supporter of the Sunnah (4). He opposed his master, who dismissed him and appointed Muḥammad b. Baqiyyah al-Bābā (5) in his place, as noted above (6). Al-ʿAbbās was imprisoned and killed in his cell in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year at the age of fifty-nine. He had been prone to oppression and injustice, and Allah knows best.
