The Accounts of al-Khiḍr and Elijah, peace be upon them
As for al-Khiḍr, it has already been noted that Moses, peace be upon him, travelled to him in search of the God-given, esoteric knowledge he possessed. God—exalted is He—has related their story in His Noble Book, in Sūrat al-Kahf, and we have discussed it in detail in our commentary there. Here we have cited the ḥadīth that explicitly mentions al-Khiḍr, peace be upon him, confirming that the one who journeyed to him was Moses son of ʿImrān, the Prophet of the Children of Israel to whom the Torah was revealed.
Scholars have differed regarding al-Khiḍr—his name, his lineage, whether he was a prophet, and whether he remains alive until now. I shall, God willing and with His might and power, set forth these opinions here.
The ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir said:
“It is said that he is al-Khiḍr, son of Adam, peace be upon him, born of his own loins.”
He then related, through the isnād of al-Dāraqutnī:
Muḥammad ibn al-Fatḥ al-Qalānsī narrated to us (1); al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tarqafī (2) narrated to us; Rawwād ibn al-Jarrāḥ narrated to us; Muqātal ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“Al-Khiḍr is a direct son of Adam, and his lifespan was extended so that he will live to refute the Antichrist.” (3) This report is disconnected and rare.
Abū Ḥātim Sahl ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān al-Sijistānī said:
“I heard our elders—among them Abū ʿUbaydah and others—say: The longest-lived of the descendants of Adam is al-Khiḍr; his name is Khiḍrūn ibn Qābīl ibn Adam.”
He added:
“Ibn Isḥāq related that when Adam, peace be upon him, was on his death-bed, he informed his children that a flood would befall mankind, and he instructed them that when it occurred they should carry his body with them in the Ark and bury him in a place he had specified. (4) When the Flood came, they did carry him with them; and when they disembarked upon the earth, Noah ordered his sons to take the body and bury it where Adam had directed.
“They said, ‘The earth is deserted and desolate.’ (5) He therefore urged and exhorted them, saying: ‘Adam supplicated for whoever undertakes his burial to be granted long life.’ Yet they shrank back from embarking on the journey …”
