, and that of Abū al-Hayjāʾ ibn Ḥamdān; a proclamation was made over the two of them: “This is the head of one who disobeyed his master.” Abū al-Sarāyā ibn Ḥamdān fled to Mosul. Ibn Nafīs had been among the fiercest opponents of al-Muqtadir; when the caliph was restored he slipped out of Baghdad in disguise, entered Mosul, went on to Armenia, and finally reached Constantinople, where he embraced Christianity there ⦗1⦘ along with its inhabitants—may Allah curse him and them.
As for Muʾnis, inwardly he was never against al-Muqtadir; he had only followed the other emirs under duress. Thus, when al-Muqtadir was placed in his house no harm at all befell him; on the contrary, Muʾnis consoled him, and had he wished he could have killed him when the demand came for his surrender. Therefore, when al-Muqtadir ⦗2⦘ returned to the caliphate, he went back to Muʾnis’s residence and spent the night there ⦗3⦘ because of his trust in him. Suddenly, on the Day of Tarwiyah, the Qarmatian fell upon them with his followers, plundered their possessions, deemed their blood licit, and slaughtered people in the squares and passes of Mecca—even inside the Sacred Mosque and within the Kaʿbah itself. Their leader, Abū Ṭāhir Sulaymān ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Jannābī—may Allah curse him—sat at the Kaʿbah’s door while men were cut down around him and swords were hewing the people ⦗6⦘ in the Sacred Mosque, in the sacred month, and on the Day of Tarwiyah, one of the most exalted of days. He kept chanting:
I am by Allah and with Allah I am;

People fled ⦗7⦘ from them and clung to the curtains of the Kaʿbah, but that availed them nothing; rather, ⦗8⦘
