Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

If anything touches you, it touches me; thus you are I and we shall never part. (1)

He also said:
Your spirit has been blended with mine
As wine is mixed with cool, limpid water;
If anything affects you, it affects me—
So you are I in every state. (2)

He likewise said:
I have perceived You in my inmost secret (m),
And my tongue conversed with You; (3)
We gathered for meanings
And we parted for meanings. (4)
If Majesty veils You from the eye’s regard,
Ecstasy has drawn You near from the depths of my being.

It was recited to Ibn ʿAṭāʾ that al-Ḥallāj said:
I seek You—not for reward,
Rather, I seek You for punishment.
All my desires I have attained
Save the delight of my ecstasy in torment. (5)

Ibn ʿAṭāʾ remarked, “These words only intensify the torment of passionate longing, the delirium of love, and the burning of sorrow; yet when the state is purified and fulfilled, it ascends to a sweet draught and to a constant outpouring of truth.”

Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khafīf once heard the following verses attributed to al-Ḥallāj:
Glory be to Him who made His humanity appear—
A spark of the piercing radiance of His divinity;
Then He showed Himself openly among His creatures
In the form of one who eats and drinks,
Until His creation beheld Him
As clearly as one eyebrow meets its twin. (6)

Ibn Khafīf said, “May Allah’s curse be upon whoever says this.” He was told, “These lines are by al-Ḥusayn ibn Manṣūr.” He replied, “Perhaps they have merely been imputed to him.” (7)

(3) Manuscripts B, H, and Za read yukhatibuka (“He addresses you”); in the Diwan (p.116) it reads fa-tanajaka (“He converses intimately with you”); in manuscript T and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi’s History of Baghdad (vol.8, p.115) it reads fa-khatibaka (“He addresses you”). The reading we have adopted is the most plausible. (4) In the Diwan (p.116) it reads bimaan. (5) Diwan al-Hallaj, p.43. (6) Diwan al-Hallaj, p.41.
