Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

so they scattered before him, and he overran their camp. Muḥammad ibn Zayd was gravely wounded and died of his injuries a few days later. His son Zayd was taken captive and sent to Ismāʿīl ibn Aḥmad, who treated him with honor and settled him in Bukhara.

Muḥammad ibn Zayd was a man of learning and refinement, known for his fair governance of those regions, though he inclined toward Shiʿism. One day two litigants came before him, one named Muʿāwiyah and the other ʿAlī. Muḥammad ibn Zayd said, “The verdict between you is obvious.” Muʿāwiyah replied, “O emir, do not be misled by our names. My father was a staunch Shiʿite; he called me Muʿāwiyah only to placate the Sunnis in our town. As for this man, his father was an ardent Nāṣibī, so he named him ʿAlī to keep on good terms with people like you.” Muḥammad ibn Zayd smiled and treated him kindly (1) — may Allah have mercy on him.

Ibn al-Athīr states in al-Kāmil (2): Among those who died this year were:
• Isḥāq ibn Ayyūb ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb al-ʿAdawī of the clan of ʿAdī of Rabīʿah. He had been governor over the district of Rabīʿah in al-Jazīrah, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Haytham ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʿtamar was appointed in his place.
• ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Baghawī, the disciple of Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām.
• Fahd ibn Aḥmad ibn Fahd al-Azdī al-Mawṣilī, one of the notable personages.

He and Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī (3) also record that Qaṭr al-Nadā, daughter of Khumārawayh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ṭūlūn and wife of the caliph al-Muʿtaḍid billāh, died in this same year. Ibn al-Jawzī says it happened on the seventh of Rajab, and she was buried inside the Ruṣāfah palace.

• Yaʿqūb ibn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb, Abū Bakr al-Muṭawwiʿī (4). He heard hadith from Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, and was in turn narrated from by al-Najjād and al-Khalidī. His daily devotional practice was to recite “Say: He, Allah, is One” (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ 112) thirty-one thousand times—or, according to another report, forty-one thousand times.

I add: Among those who also died this year was Abū Bakr (5) ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, author of al-Sunnah and many other works. He is Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim al-Ḍaḥḥāk (6) ibn Makhlad, known as al-Nabīl. He produced numerous hadith compilations, among them
