Muḥammad ibn Yūnus (1): son of Mūsā ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿUbayd ibn Rabīʿah ibn Kudaym, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Qurashī, the Baṣran al-Kudaymī—his mother was the wife of Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah. He was born in 183 AH.
He received ḥadith from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, al-Aṣmaʿī, and many others.
Those who transmitted from him include Ibn al-Sammāk and al-Najjād; the last to relate from him was Abū Bakr ibn Mālik al-Qaṭīʿī. A ḥāfiẓ who narrated copiously and with far-flung journeys, he was nonetheless criticized for the unusual reports he conveyed.
We have already presented his detailed biography in our book al-Takmīl, which is sufficient—praise and gratitude belong to Allah.
He was buried on a Friday, before the congregational prayer, on the fifteenth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year, having exceeded one hundred years of age. The judge [Yūsuf ibn] (2) Yaʿqūb led the funeral prayer—may Allah have mercy on him.
Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq ibn Taḥiyyah (3), Abū Yūsuf al-Wāsiṭī, heard ḥadith from Yazīd ibn Hārūn. He later came to Baghdad and there narrated four hadiths, promising the people he would continue the next day; he died that very night at the age of one hundred and twelve (4) years—may Allah have mercy on him.
Al-Walīd Abū ʿUbādah al-Buḥturī, as mentioned by our teacher al-Dhahabī (5); his death was previously recorded under the events of the year 283 AH, as likewise noted by Ibn al-Jawzī (6).
