Al-Bukhārī reports:
Abū al-Walīd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated: I asked Abū Wāʾil, who said, “I heard ʿAbd Allāh (Ibn Masʿūd) say:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once distributed some property. A man remarked, “This division was not intended for Allah’s sake.” I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. He became so angry that I could see the anger in his face. He then said,
“May Allah have mercy on Moses. He was harmed with worse than this, yet he remained patient.”’
Muslim likewise transmits the same report through several chains from Sulaymān ibn Mihrān al-Aʿmash.
Imām Aḥmad relates:
Ḥajjāj narrated to us; I heard Isrāʾīl ibn Yūnus, from al-Walīd ibn Abī Hishām—the client of Hamdān—from Zayd ibn Abī Zāʾid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his Companions:
“Let no one convey to me anything about anyone, for I wish to come out to you with a heart free of resentment.”
Later, some wealth came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he distributed it. I passed by two men, and one of them said to the other, “By Allah, Muhammad did not intend Allah’s Face or the Everlasting Abode by this division.” I remained until I had heard what they said, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and reported: “O Messenger of Allah, you told us, ‘Let no one convey to me anything about any of my Companions,’ and yet I passed by so-and-so and so-and-so and they were saying such-and-such.” The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned red, and the matter weighed heavily upon him. He then said:
“Leave us be, for Moses was harmed with more than this, yet he bore it patiently.”’
Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī also transmit this ḥadīth from Isrāʾīl, from al-Walīd ibn Abī Hishām. Al-Tirmidhī, and likewise Abū Dāwūd, record another wording through the route of Ibn al-ʿAbd, from Isrāʾīl, from al-Suddī, from al-Walīd. Al-Tirmidhī commented, “It is gharib from this chain.”
It is authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, in the narrations of the Night Journey, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Moses, who was standing and praying in his grave; Muslim also reports it from Anas. And in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, in the narration of Qatādah from Anas, from Mālik ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah, from the Prophet ﷺ, it is stated that on the night of the Ascension he passed Moses in the sixth heaven. Gabriel said to him, “This is Moses; greet him.” He continues:
“So I greeted him, and he replied, ‘Welcome, righteous Prophet and righteous brother.’ When I moved on, he wept. It was said to him, ‘What makes you weep?’ He said, ‘I weep because a youth sent after me will enter Paradise with more of his community than will enter from mine.’”
The narration also mentions that Abraham was in the seventh heaven.
