He passed away in this very year. Others said it was in the year 247 AH (1), and still others said 286 AH, but the first opinion is the sounder.
ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sinān b. Dallawayh (2)—Abū Mūsā al-Ṭayālisī, the ḥāfiẓ, nicknamed Zaghāth (3)—heard ḥadith from ʿAffān and Abū Nuʿaym, while Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī and many others narrated from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī declared him trustworthy. He died in Shawwāl of this year at the age of eighty-four.
Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī (4): Muḥammad b. Idrīs b. al-Munḏir b. Dāwūd b. Mihrān, Abū Ḥātim al-Ḥanẓalī al-Rāzī, was one of the foremost, reliable ḥuffāẓ, well-versed in the hidden defects of ḥadith and in jarḥ wa taʿdīl (criticism and accreditation). He was the contemporary of Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī—may Allah envelop them both in His mercy.
He heard extensively, travelled through many lands and cities, and narrated from a multitude of senior scholars. Those who narrated from him include al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān and Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, who were both older than he. He came to Baghdad and taught there; among its people who transmitted from him were Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, al-Maḥāmilī, and others.
He said to his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (5): “My son, I have walked on foot in search of ḥadith for more than one thousand parasangs.” He added that at times he had nothing to spend, and that he once went three days without eating anything until he borrowed half a dinar from a companion.
Many scholars and jurists praised him. He used to challenge the ḥuffāẓ and others who attended his gatherings, saying, “Whoever can bring me a single authentic ḥadith unknown to me shall receive from me one dirham, which I will give in charity.” He explained, “My aim is to hear something I do not yet possess, but no one ever produced anything.” Among those present on such occasions was Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī (6). Abū Ḥātim died in Shaʿbān of this year.
Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā (7): Ibn al-Ḥasan Abū Jaʿfar al-Kūfī al-Kharrāz, known as al-Ḥunaynī, compiled a large Musnad.
