Then the year 274 AH commenced.
In it war (1) broke out between Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq and ʿAmr ibn al-Layth in the province of Fārs. Abū Aḥmad advanced against him, but ʿAmr fled from town to town while Abū Aḥmad pursued. No battle or direct engagement took place. The commander of ʿAmr ibn al-Layth’s army—Abū Ṭalḥah Sharkab al-Jammāl—defected to Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq. When he later tried to return, Abū Aḥmad seized him and bestowed his property upon his own son, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Muʿtaḍid. This occurred near Shīrāz.
In the same year Bazmar the khādim, deputy of Ṭarsūs, raided Byzantine territory, penetrated deeply, killed, plundered, and came back safely.
Also in this year Ṣiddīq al-Farghānī entered Sāmarrāʾ, looted the merchants’ houses there, and withdrew. Formerly counted among those who patrolled the roads, he abandoned that post and turned to highway robbery, while the troops in Sāmarrāʾ were too weak to oppose him.
Among the notable figures who died this year were:
• Ibrāhīm ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Aṣamm, Abū Isḥāq. Ibn al-Jawzī says in al-Muntaẓam (2): “He was a ḥāfiẓ and a man of merit; he narrated from Ḥarmalah and others.” He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year.
• Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ziyād, Abū Yaʿqūb the Qur’an-reciter. He narrated from Hudbah, and Ibn Makhlad (3) narrated from him. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal.
• Ayyūb ibn Sulaymān (4) ibn Dāwūd al-Ṣafdī. He heard from Ādam ibn Abī Iyyās, Abū al-Yamān, and ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd. Ibn Ṣāʿid and Ibn al-Sammāk transmitted from him. He was reliable and died in Ramadan.
• al-Ḥasan ibn Mukram (5) ibn Ḥassān, Abū ʿAlī al-Bazzāz. He heard ʿAffān, Abū al-Naḍr (6), Yazīd ibn Hārūn, and others. From him narrated al-Mahāmilī, Ibn Makhlad, and al-Najjād.
