During it:
– The Kharijite Musāwir killed Yaḥyā (1) ibn Jaʿfar, who was in charge of the Khurasan road, in Jumāda al-Ākhirah. Masrūr al-Balkhī set out against him, followed by Abū Aḥmad ibn al-Mutawakkil, but Musāwir withdrew and they did not catch him.
– That same year a battle took place between Ibn Wāṣil, who had seized Fārs, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mufliḥ. Ibn Wāṣil defeated and captured him, killed Ṭāshtamur, and annihilated (2) the army (3) that was with him, so that only a few escaped.
– Ibn Wāṣil then marched on Wāsiṭ intending to fight Mūsā ibn Bugha. Mūsā ibn Bugha returned to the royal court and asked to be relieved of the deputyship over the eastern provinces because of the multitude of rebels there. He was removed from office and that responsibility was given to Abū Aḥmad, the brother of Caliph al-Muʿtamad.
– Abū al-Sāj set out to fight the Zanj. A fierce engagement followed, but the Zanj routed his forces, entered al-Ahwāz, killed great numbers of its inhabitants, and burned their homes.
– Abū al-Sāj was then dismissed from the deputyship of al-Ahwāz and from the war against the Zanj, and Ibrāhīm ibn Sīmā was appointed in his stead.
– Masrūr al-Balkhī also equipped an army to fight the Zanj.
– That year Naṣr ibn Aḥmad ibn Asad al-Sāmānī was appointed over the territories beyond the river at Balkh, and the decree reached him in Ramadan.
– In Shawwāl Yaʿqūb ibn al-Layth advanced against Ibn Wāṣil. They met in Dhū al-Qaʿdah; Yaʿqūb routed him, shattered his army, captured his maternal uncle (4) together with a number of his womenfolk, seized property worth forty million dirhams, killed those locals who had supported him, and secured (5) that region—may Allah reward him well.
– When twelve nights of Shawwāl had passed, al-Muʿtamad ʿAlā Allāh invested his son Jaʿfar with succession, naming him al-Mufawwaḍ ilā Allāh, and granted him the Maghrib. He attached to him Mūsā ibn Bugha and placed under his authority Ifrīqiya, Egypt, Syria, the Jazīra, Mosul, Armenia, the Khurasan road, and other provinces. He stipulated that after Jaʿfar power should pass to Abū Aḥmad ibn al-Mutawakkil, upon whom he conferred the honorific al-Muwaffaq bi-llāh, and entrusted to him the Mashriq, together with Masrūr al-Balkhī, assigning him Baghdad, the Sawād, Kūfa, the route to Mecca and Medina, Yemen, Kaskar, the districts along the Tigris, al-Ahwāz, Fārs, Isfahan, Qumm, al-Karkh, Dīnawār, Rayy, Zanjān (6), Sind, and the rest. Official documents were drawn up to that effect, proclaimed throughout the provinces, and a copy was affixed to the honored Kaʿba.
