and he would skim through them like an arrow, as though he were reciting, “Say, He is Allah, the One.” (1)
Ahmad ibn Hamdun al-Qassar said: “I once saw Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj come to al-Bukhari, kiss him between the eyes, and say, ‘Allow me to kiss your feet, O teacher of the teachers, master of the hadith scholars, and physician of hadith in its hidden flaws.’ (2) He then asked him about the hadith concerning the expiation for a gathering (3), and al-Bukhari explained its defect to him. When he had finished, Muslim declared, ‘No one dislikes you except a jealous soul, and I testify that there is no one on earth like you.’ (4)
Al-Tirmidhi said: “In Iraq or in Khurasan I have never seen anyone more knowledgeable than al-Bukhari regarding hidden defects, historical criticism, and the study of chains of transmission.” (5)
We were once in the company of ʿAbd Allah ibn Munayr when he said to al-Bukhari, “May Allah make you the adornment of this Ummah.” Al-Tirmidhi remarked, “His prayer was answered for him.” (6)
Ibn Khuzaymah said: “Under the vault of heaven I have never seen anyone more learned in, or with a better memory for, the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than Muhammad ibn Ismaʿil al-Bukhari.” (7)
Were we to record everything the leading scholars have said about his memorization, precision, knowledge, and juridical insight

(3) The hadith is narrated by Aḥmad in his Musnad (vol. 2, p. 494) and by al-Tirmidhī in his Sunan (no. 3433). Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-‘Irqī, in Takhrīj al-Iḥyā’ (vol. 2, p. 193), states that al-Tirmidhī transmitted it from Abū Hurayra and authenticated it; al-Ḥākim included it in his Mustadrak (vol. 1, p. 537), affirming it as ṣaḥīḥ per Muslim’s criteria, though he faulted al-Bukhārī for a defect in the chain regarding Wahb’s report via Ibn ‘Uqba from Suhayl from his father from Ka‘b. Ibn Ḥajar, in Fath al-Bārī (vol. 13, p. 544), corrects this, noting no mention of Suhayl’s father or Ka‘b in the isnād; the proper link is from Suhayl through ‘Awn, as confirmed in ‘Ulūm al-Ḥadīth. Al-Bayhaqī in al-Madkhal also records it from al-Ḥākim via al-Bukhārī, stating that Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā b. Mu‘īn both received it from Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad, quoting Bukhārī’s wording and observing that he knows of no other chain “in the world” for this hadith apart from Bukhārī’s. Al-Ḥākim’s phrase “in this chapter” is an apparent slip; the correct reading is “in this isnād.” After Abu Hurayra’s report (Mustadrak, vol. 1, p. 537), he cites supporting narrations from Jubayr b. Mu‘ṭim, Abū Burda al-Aslamī, and Rāfi‘ b. Khadīj, affirming Jubayr’s report as ṣaḥīḥ—a view endorsed by al-Dhahabī. Al-‘Irqī, in his notes on Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ’s ‘Ulūm al-Ḥadīth, records that the hadith was transmitted by a group of Companions exceeding al-Tirmidhī’s count by seven. He adds that he has traced five additional routes and, in his own work on ‘Ulūm al-Ḥadīth, collected and analyzed these and several mursal transmissions from the Tābi‘īn, whose chains he deemed sound, demonstrating the hadith’s foundational authenticity. He compiled all variant isnāds and matns (texts) and noted that Fath al-Bārī concludes with the wording: “Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa bi-ḥamdika, lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk.” He concludes that the hadith is ṣaḥīḥ, both marfū‘ and mawqūf, owing to its numerous chains and corroborations; see Fath al-Bārī (vol. 13, pp. 544–546).
